I like political fluff. Makes my job more interesting. I think ultimately most people make their voting decisions on unsubstantial matters rather than the ones they consider 'important' to the operation of a country.

Tony Abbott in trouble today over comments that have been construed by some as being a dig at Julia Gillard for being barren. The man doesn't help himself.

His point isn't so much about political "fluff" so much at it is about "meta"-politics, ie. horse race politics - judging something based on its political merits or the political tactics involved, not on what it actually is. Get too wrapped up in that sort of meta-political analysis and you lose sight of what people actually care about, which is what happened a few weeks back.

There are two ways the whole surplus thing will work out.
- Swan succeeds in achieving surplus. Says "I told you so" to the Liberals while they say that it's a small surplus and won't last anyway while maintaining that Labor is fiscally irresponsible.
- Swan doesn't succeed in achieving surplus. Liberals say "I told you so" and say it proves Labor is fiscally irresponsible.

Both tediously predictable.

Also on another note with this Maxine McKew book thing - why is anyone acting surprised that apparently Julia Gillard plotted to overthrow Kevin Rudd? I thought that would have been obvious two goddamn years ago when Julia Gillard, you know, overthrew Kevin Rudd.

Just want to say that this week's 'WTF M8' award for political daftness has to go to the New South Wales Government. After announcing huge cuts to health, education, and public service and justifying these with criticisms of the previous Government and the billions of dollars of debt they were left in, the NSW Government found after an auditor-general's report that it actually had a billion or so more than it thought and was in fact in surplus.

However on top of this the 'WTF M8' is presented specifically to NSW Treasurer Mike Baird for, in announcing this surprise extra money found in the couch cushions, insisted that it was a bad thing and is somehow someone else's fault.
