His point isn't so much about political "fluff" so much at it is about "meta"-politics, ie. horse race politics - judging something based on its political merits or the political tactics involved, not on what it actually is. Get too wrapped up in that sort of meta-political analysis and you lose sight of what people actually care about, which is what happened a few weeks back.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.
