No, you just need to explain how you can post that on this website while taking handouts while being unemployed.

The message issued by the Obama administration basically apologized for free speech. I think they should've been criticized for that, and they were. It's even more silly because the attacks had nothing to do with any video or speech or anything.Spearhead wrote:

America’s “paper of record," headquartered just three miles north of Ground Zero, dramatically scaled back its coverage of the latest anniversary of the attacks, in which terrorist flew planes into the Twin Towers, killing thousands. In typical Times fashion, the decision sparked hand-wringing and introspection among the Old Gray Lady’s top brass.

Even if it is necroquoting, it's still a startling quote. I can't be positive on the context. Was it an all-encompassing statement or more situational? That's why I asked.Jay wrote:

Probably a rant against socialism and the inherent evils that come when people become dependent on any form of government handout. Oh, I think it had to do with Obamacare and how I don't believe people have a right to a doctors time just because they have a pulse. A persons time being of value and not something that should be stolen by bureaucrats on behalf of others. If I remember correctly, I was arguing with Euros who were praising NHS or somesuch. Whatever.
Could've also been about people not making a positive contribution to society being a net loss on the rest of us. Those who live off the system with no intention of ever getting off etc.

to be honest there does need to be a time when everyone stops crying and harping on about past tragedy. an anniversary is an anniversary, but you can't open the wounds and relet the blood every damn time. i wouldn't say 'fair play' or 'respect' to that shit-rag of a paper for going with some sensationalist smut instead, though. but at least the media are starting to tacitly acknowledge that the pity-train meta-narrative of 9/11 is coming to a close.Jay wrote:

p.s. you are dumb to argue against euros against the NHS. especially considering you have taken free handouts before. i mean for a start it's only the uk that has the NHS.

i didn't know Jay was on unemployment. as for myself, my wife and i decided that continuing my education would be our priority. we took out a loan to help with tuition, but other than that we are self sufficient.Macbeth wrote:

so tell me Jay, how is it i don't deserve health care? 30+ years of FICA and S.S. contributions = 0?

You don't deserve Medicare because you haven't paid for it. Every person in your generation and the generation before you is going to spend hundreds of thousands more than you paid into the system over the course of your retirement. Who do you think is going to pay for that excess?13urnzz wrote:

I've been saying for years that they need to stop doing the memorial every year, or at least broadcasting it on every tv channel for five hours+. I just thought it was funny that foxnews decided to cast stones at the NY Times when that was the Posts front page yesterday.aynrandroolz wrote:

It's a philosophical question. If you have provided value to society, you receive payment in return in the form of money. If you've provided no value, you receive no money. By this reasoning, those who earn less money provide less benefit to society as a whole. Because they provide less, they have less access to services etc. Need for money is what keeps people on the hamster wheel and drives our entire society. If you give them free money you destroy the entire system by making people less motivated. Again, it's all philosophical, and it was the entire premise for my argument back then. I don't actually think people should starve in the gutters.

So...you value a rich shut-in who plays with his stocks portfolio for a living more than you value, say, a farmer, a college student, a flagger or a Denny's waitress? America didn't used to be like that. Those who earn less money provide less benefit to society as a whole.
Real talk now... I think Social Security and Medicare are abominations because A) the systems are giant Ponzi schemes and B) give people a false sense of security about their retirement and C) the same people that like SS and Medicare are the same people that refuse to see their taxes raised to pay for it. That said, most people are idiots that can't plan a family menu a week in advance let alone plan 30-40-50 years ahead for retirement.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

I actually really like Australias Superannuation system because they invest the principle rather than handing money out as fast as they take it in. Our own systems are FUBAR.

ah, an honest response. i will say i deserve healthcare because i am paying for it - even without an income currently. i'm on my wife's employee plan, a benefit of being married. In the 20+ years we've been together, we have accumulated some assets and savings.Jay wrote:

the point isn't philosophical for me right now, i am a full time student with no regular income, and if a catastrophic illness were to happen to either of us we would be fucked financially.
America has always been like that. If he's playing with his stocks portfolio he's touching far more lives than the farmer or the college student or the flagger. You might not see it, but but doing what he's doing he's helping the economy grow. Is Albert Pujols worth $200M+ over the next ten years? You might say no, but I say yes simply because he brings enough joy to enough people that to them it's worth it. People spend 500 hours+ watching him as entertainment, talking about him on message boards etc. It's all about impact, and the smaller the cog you are, the more easily replaced you are. It's just the way it is.unnamednewbie13 wrote:
