i've got my ninjas in bf2s and they goin' gorillas
I still play games and chat to a lot of decent BF2s'ers, as well as having Androoz basically as a data-archiving human pager on Xfire. So, whilst the BF2s 'community' still plays games as a nebulous group, with me not so much as even giving a thought to these Forums... I do get told, from time to time, that my name is mentioned. Which, when I see the posts, invariably always ends up just being really quite sad and pathetic. You are essentially trying to massage your ego and feel better about your life choices in this thread by comparing them - rather oddly - to mine, who supposedly "is nervous about his job prospects" (funny that, I've worked for Apple in the private-sector and I'm about to go to the top university in the world for my subject to become a doctor...). At the same time you smugly tell yourself that "people get weeded out" of Engineering courses, as if that's some sort of rarity and proof of your discipline's innate hardness. Reality check, dumbo: at pretty much every top school a number of weaker candidates drop out or drop down into the bottom pass-grade. It's called going to a competitive/selective institution. You act like your shit don't stink cause you have a government-handout engi degree from a military college*. To anyone outside of your little engineer circlejerk, it looks tragic and pathetic.
*A college with an all-so-discriminating 45% acceptance rate; 90% males (what a laugh-riot); and its biggest strength and most popular major being 'tourism and travel services management' (with a whopping 35% of all undergraduates taking this course). A college furthermore you only got into and afforded because of handouts and a POG career in the military. And you have the temerity to mention the 'path of least resistance'... rofl.

I mentioned you in a music thread once. It was referring to you introducing me to IDM. It wasn't sad or pathetic.

Figured as much. There's one thing that annoys me about university rankings and that's the anglo-saxon bias. I'm aware of the fact that unis in the UK and US probably attract much more international attention and can thereby hog top researchers & professors from all over the world but nonetheless I just have a hard time believing that the top 100 are rightfully populated by, almost exclusively, unis from english-speaking countries. I suppose judging the 'top 100' also gets harder when you start dealing with 'foreign' unis as quite a bit of the research is written down in the native tongue. When I saw the Universities of Berlin, which by almost all accounts I've heard are absolute quality, at 90> I was left scratching my head. (my uni, Utrecht University, places ~40-50)aynrandroolz wrote:
Most rankings are really just much of a muchness. The UoL is a powerhouse. All the institutions have been there for 100+ years, at a top world-leading level. Many of the lower-ranking smaller colleges are still world-leading in their small and specific interests. Same goes for certain departments/cross-institutional study centres (like the War Studies centre or the Holocaust studies centre at UCL/RHUL, or the Information Security Group, etc). I wouldn't worry about 5-year fluctuations. None are 'falling from grace' or really taking any meaningful hit to reputations.
Sounds pretty bad. Anyhow unis usually really want to fill their international student quota and bump it up whenever they can to increase prestige, standing etc so I might be able to figure something out for a scholarship, if not there perhaps here. I'm not counting on it though and will make sure to have 8k in the bank when I apply. Cheersaynrandroolz wrote:
Also there are approx. ZERO scholarships for postgraduates in the UK right now. Current government axed them. Wouldn't presume. I am the only person I know to get a full scholarship for postgraduate study - it is literally an academic career maker in the UK, because it is so rare. Our universities are not private like in the States, so they don't have huge endowments and large scholarship funds; they basically have what the government says they can have. Which in the last 2-3 years has been very little. To get funding for my Oxford DLitt (of which I have practically the highest chance any individual candidate can have, with my record) I have to go against nearly 1,000 annual applicants, of which about 40 are accepted for a place (acceptance only possible on the proviso they can sign and guarantee £60k in advance...) and about SIX are funded. Cambridge gets about four funded places per year. Getting funding for research/taught MA's is even harder, because they're not as important or crucial (or expensive, furthermore) as doctorates. I was the only scholarship to be granted by the English department (a high-ranking and prestigious department - you'd think they have a lot of scholarship money!) for the 2012 year. International students have even less of a chance than domestic students to get scholarships - unless you can find one from an external body, such as the EU or your government or somesuch body that have a 'vested interest' in your war/historical research (which good luck, by the way, 'cause trying to get postgraduate funding is probably one of the biggest obstacles to most academically-inclined people, which truly makes the difference between those that 'do' as a career and those that 'do not'. You must be exceptional compared with your peers, and your research-interests must be relevant to the university and funding body [which in the UK happens to be the government, so doubly good luck]).
Feels glorious to be able to say all of this now, 7 days from completion with a doctoral place secured Good luck!

Damn, Uzique.
I don't mind reading, but.. really. "brevity is the soul of wit" and all.
So, the TL/DR version would be you're busy being the English blueblood Charlie Sheen, with a doctorate in History soon.

Congrats

I've just finished writing about 70,000 words of career-making life-shatteringly awesome academic research. I've got all day to type insults at fat insecure goobers on the Internet. Sorry I can't express my contempt in an equation or something.
And thanks.

I wish you well.
Without you, SERE, Kmar, Gunslinger, FEOS, nexus, and a few others here, I find less and less reason to visit bf2s.
Why'd you even bother reading that?rdx-fx wrote:

Was hoping there might be a bit of wit in it.
Even when being an asshole, there are a few people here that usually throw in a witty barb, or ironic twist to a point.
Pretty much the only reason I read you, Uzique, or Dilbert.
There's intelligence there, combined with a heavy dose of smartass.
Even if I completely disagree with whatever malformed, partially digested opinion one of you vomits up, there's generally a smirk-worthy chunk floating in there somewhere.
Except that in this case, absolutely none of my post content was malformed or ill thought out. Just the facts and figures and plain objective matter-of-fact rebuttals to Jay's sad and desperate crowing. If i was opining on the state of the US economy, or Israel-Palestine, or the Iraq War... perhaps there's room to argue. Saying I've taken an easy ride through life however, with Jay's credentials... well, it's a little too clear cut to warrant much further explanation.
The length and loquacity was just me really enjoying the process of reminding Jay what a bottom-feeder he is. A bottom-feeder that still evidently has a huge chip on his (also rather huge) shoulder.

Hello Uzi. Like the username.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
First of all, don't flatter yourself, I don't give any thought to you whatsoever. I simply used you as an example in that post.aynrandroolz wrote:

Second of all, you of all people feel you can criticize others regarding what you perceive as crowing? Just about every post you ever wrote on this forum was a thinly veiled 'look at me! look at me! i'm fucking awesome!' post. It was mildly entertaining at first, but then I just felt sorry for you. The fact that you grabbed all the no-life losers on this forum and pulled them in your wake just made it funny. The 'Zomg I'm majoring in humanities too! let me suck uzique's dick and then I'll be cool too!' crowd always had me laughing hysterically. So welcome back, at least I'll get a laugh around here every once in a while.
Lastly, the chip on my shoulder is rather small. I'm quite enjoying life. I'm happily married, I make solid money, and I'm looking to purchase a house next summer. Now all I need is a sailboat and some kids...

Perhaps then, when you have elevated yourself to that rather average station in life, you can afford to send your kids to expensive liberal arts colleges to study humanities!

I've practically bequeathed to you an entire new language in which to express yourselves.
Piss in the punch? I'm the oxygen in the air you breathe, Ty. Wake up and smell my roses.
And you've added a new verb to the english language
To uzique (yoozeek) v. - To waste ones life on some pointless task with no prospect of kudos outside a small but irrelevant clique or remuneration beyond pocket money.
eg: "He was an OK guy, but then he uziqued his life away playing minecraft and losing at online poker"

A born and bred Brit studing English at university would never use the US spelling of the word "foetus".
