this is lance armstrong we're talking about. i'm inclined to think that if he actually hadn't doped he'd fight this to his last breath; these are his tdf titles we're talking about. i mean, ffs, the guy beat ball cancer to get some of these titles, what's a few bureaucrats compared to cancer and the pyrenees?

I don't know, faced with a bureaucracy with more funds than you its easy to give up.

Then again there are a lot of people close to him who've sworn he was a cheat.

i don't think a lack of money is exactly an impediment to lance armstrong.

i'm not saying this is done/dusted/he's def a cheat. but if he was trying to allay suspicion - well the exact opposite has happened for me.

Did, you stop to think it doesnt really matter if hes found innocent or guilty. As soon as the accusations are made, it forms cracks of doubt for the rest of his life. It takes away some of the shine that made him a hero to so many. The only way this comes out good for him is if it were some grand conspiracy that gets outted. (Not saying it is by the way.)

which is why if he's innocent he should fight it...?

which is exactly why the 'he doesn't gaf' argument doesn't wash with me.

Because they will never stop going after him. He's become the obsession of the anti-doping crowd and, frankly, the French would like nothing more than to destroy the American that dominated their race for so long.

ehh, what makes you say that? It's not like the french have been up there fighting for it for ages.. Nothing since Hinault/Fignon..

I'd say most cycling fans (including the french) wish Armstrong was clean. He's done absolutely massive things for the sport (cycling's Tiger Woods, really) and is a huge inspiration for everyone, not least those diagnosed with cancer. At least, he was.

But it was a rotten dirty sport at his time, and every cycling fan also wants it cleaned up. Which they're doing quite well - the current cyclists are cycling quite a bit slower than Lance and his competitors atm, which says a lot.

The IOC still has a lot to answer for (ruined the sport, many would argue), as does Lance. The evidence is building up - former team mate after former team mate, closer and closer friends, more and more reliable cyclists, are admitting that they were on a team that used drugs (US Postal).

its the USADA going after Lance this time.  The French have tried.

I think there is some truth in the confessions of doping by many teammates on the US Postal Team.  Perhaps Lance is tired of the battles.  Cyclists are some of the biggest cheaters out there.  It's hardly an isolated incident, and it's not just Americans that are disqualified and stripped of their titles.  Look at the history of the Tour de France, it's rife with cheating.

Right, but what purpose is served by chasing after the guy for like ten years? It's as stupid as hauling Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens in front of Congress. Are they going to take those yellow jerseys and hand them off to the guys that finished second? Are they going to conduct a witch hunt on them to strip them in turn? The whole thing is stupid. If anti-doping measures are better now, good, now you can say the sport is cleaner. Move on.

yes. then results are how well you cheat, as opposed to the sport itself. unless we're talking baseball, when even drugs couldn't make the sport interesting . . .

That Samsung has to pay Apple a billion dollars...and not change a damn thing they've been doing, as far as I can tell.

As for Lance Armstrong: He's had nearly 600 clean drug tests. He's being told to prove a negative, without being told who his accusers are or the details of their accusations. I don't blame him for telling he USADA to get bent.

That's not entirely true. We know that a hell of a lot of US Postal guys have come out and said that he's a cheat. Granted, some of them are proven cheats themselves, and some aren't.

And on the samples...

http://nyvelocity.com/content/interview … enden?null

My understanding is that the percentage of cheats who test positive is quite low.

Having said that, I do think the USADA have been fairly underhanded in this all. I just don't buy Armstrong's indignant huff, that's all.

his first follow-up point is the salient one.

1. Guilty or not of doping. Lance Armstrong is not a convicted doper, he has never been found guilty of doping, and he has steadfastly maintained his innocence. As far as I am aware, Marion Jones is not a convicted doper, she has never been found guilty of doping, and she steadfastly maintained her innocence - until she admitted lying to a federal investigator about taking banned substances (note: lying to a federal investigator is NOT a doping offence). Whether or not their respective sports can benefit from increases in mechanical efficiency, neither athlete has ever had a positive doping sanction imposed. To put it simply - not testing positive does not establish that an athlete did not use banned substances.

Armstrong passed every doping test they gave him.

In the Tour de France, that should be the gold standard.
Actually not doping? In that sport?  That's just crazy talk.

The point is not to get caught.
He didn't, he perfectly played the rules given to him.
