It seems like every other month some cable channel or other is temporarily off the air as the channel negotiates yet another increase in the money they receive from the cable company for carrying them. That would be cool and all, except I have no choice whether I want these channels or not. I supposedly have some 500 channels to choose from but I watch maybe 10 of them. Hell, I despise ESPN but I'm forced to pay them ~$5/mo. Internet tv can't come soon enough.
Edit - and yes, I know I don't have to have a tv at all.

I just want to be able to pay for 10-20 channels instead of the lot of them.

If you have an antenna you can watch network television channels, but beyond that you have to buy from a cable or satellite provider.

The way the system is set up, a handful of companies own most of the tv channels. They might have one really popular channel, and a bunch of garbage that shows nothing but reruns all day, but they'll force the cable providers to carry the entire package, and make them pay for the privilege of broadcasting it. That cost gets passed onto the customers and we end up with a bunch of channels we don't want and sky high cable costs.

Yeah I'd rather they trim the fat and cut costs. Most people I know really only watch 10 channels (or less) on a regular basis. My basic cable bill isn't very high - $18 on top of my cable internet bill, for about 60 channels. I don't want to buy premium channels, because I would almost double that just by adding the HBO package.
All I really want are Fox Sports, ESPN, NBC Sports, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network (adult swim), and maybe Science and a couple other random channels. I could really care less about FOX/ABC/NBC/CBS. If I could get just the few channels I want for $10, and HBO for $10, I would do that gladly instead of paying $18 for 60 channels that are mostly worthless to me.

Dude, my bill for cable + internet is $170/mo. and my only premium channel is HBO.

Cable companys run quite the racket. We pay about that and only use 10-15 channels. We get well over 200 and they actually cut the amount of channels we get without cutting our billJay wrote:
