The thing is I like to get to know a girl first before I think I want to date her. That drops me in the "friendzone" quickly in that I didn't make my intentions clear. Thing is I didn't like her like that and as I got to know her more I became interested but at that point she only saw me as a friend.

No you can't. But you have to be realistic about it. You may get lucky and find a perfect 10 who suits you on every level. But that is beyond an execption when you may only be a 5. And the girls posted in the "rate the girl" thread are all 8+, with the execption of the joke postings and most of dilberts.
