I don't really believe in loss limits - bit of a blunt instrument for mine - but mandatory pre-commitment has always struck as an eminently sensible (if costly) idea.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.

I'd wager (£100, any takers?) that anyone that is comfortable losing 6k a night probably has the means and motive to cross state lines and enjoy a night in some indian casino. If someone has a problem and losses more than they can afford to then they can just as easily do that online can't they?

As for the question itself, ethically it's a grey area and I don't think it's the governments place to put a flat loss limit for some arbitrary amount. I don't have a gambling problem and I play online poker pretty much daily, so I can't comment but if I was held at gunpoint I'd guess most people with a gambling problem will only learn when they see the effects on their loved ones/themselves.

Does MO also track your DTI to check to make sure you can afford that jet ski you are buying on your credit card? That new bike for your kid? That expensive dinner you want to treat your fiancee to?  Perhaps since the federal government has ruled corporations are people too, they should regulate the limits businesses can lose on gambles.  A business going bankrupt has far more social impact than a person losing $500 gambling.

This is absolutely retarded and I can't believe people are actually in favor of this.

Gambling addiction is a serious problem.  This seems like an expedient solution.

While I disapprove against laws to protect "stupid", this particular law concerns a 2-hour boat excursion where you are sorta kept from "leaving".  And as such, I'm on the fence.

BTW, I have to thank stupids for keeping prices relatively good for all the other non-gambling sins that Vegas has to offer.

Meh, there are casinos in St Louis that count as 'riverboats' because they have water from the Mississippi pumped underneath them. Don't take the 'riverboat' thing at face value.

They don't need to limit the "tax on stupid" that is gambling.
They need to keep people with addictive thrill-seeking sociopathic personalities away from other people's money.

But then Las Vegas, Wall Street, and Washington DC would collapse.

I think the governments place in this is to educate and rehabilitate. Not this.

I'm going to a bachelor party in three weeks in Atlantic City. The bachelor will undoubtedly spend $100 on nickel slots watching the flashing lights and whirring cylinders. I'll put $100 on black and then get hammered at the bar. I hate casinos.

I'll mostly be playing poker, there won't be just 1 game of that. I'm not big on roulette or the others because the odds are slanted to the house. Poker you can pick and choose your own odds. I'm just gonna have 1 spin because I'll be there and doing it in person might have some novelty.

he could have 2 hours of fun watching that $100 play with nothing to show for it after those two hours.  You could have 2 minutes of fun and nothing to show for it after those 2 minutes.  And this statement of yours is supposed to show what?  That you don't like gambling and blow money?

It's crazy hearing people comment on gambling that have obviously never done it or don't care for it.  I like gambling - it's just another chemical release my body enjoys.  To quote UGod of the Wu Tang Clan (who was paraphrasing someone else, I'm sure) "The thrill of victory, the agony, defeat."

It was just an observation on what my night will be like. I sat with him once at a casino in PA and he happily blew his entire $100 over the course of two hours. I blew $50, got bored, took my other fifty over to a video roulette machine and ended up back where I started I just really don't enjoy gambling. Doesn't really have anything to do with the OP.

My comment was fairly tongue-in-cheek. I was basically insinuating you are sort of betting the casino it will take you x amount of money to win it back.
