Worst story I've heard was a guy went trigger happy in the general direction of a burgler in his home.
Heard something moving in the closet, opened the closet, fired every bullet he had in the pistol into the closet.
Shot his 4 year old daughter, who was up getting a drink of water or using the bathroom, got scared and hid in the closet.
Her last words were, supposedly, "Daddy, I love you".

Know what the fuck you're shooting at, and where every round is going to end up.
Before you pull the trigger.
Which is exactly why paranoia and guns don't mix. Some cop shot his kid a few weeks ago because he immediately thought the worst when he heard noises downstairs. Occams razor applies to 'strange noises'.

Owning a firearm doesn't make you a badass,
racking the pump on a SuperTacticalSOCOMElite shotgun doesn't make you a badass,
even pulling a trigger doesn't make you a badass.
Being able to control a potentially violent situation, rationally, properly, and with the least possible use of force - then you might be a badass.

Scared people pull triggers when they don't have to.

But, if you have a firearm in the house, and you grab it "just in case" when shit goes bump in the night - you may want a plan for using it responsibly. Same goes with the HAM radio operators putting antennae up in the rain, with the lightning plan.

A pump shotgun acts in the same way that a burglar alarm does. If the alarm goes off the people robbing your house will probably flee at the first note. The only people that have to worry about home invasions are generally people who have it coming i.e. they are in the drug business or something. Normal people don't have their home broken into with the intent being the death of the owners or kidnapping or something. To state otherwise is just delusional. "I need this gun because of the one in ten billion chance that my home will be broken into, my wife will be raped, and I will be murdered, all unprovoked."
You are so wrong. In so many ways.
No I'm not. You proved it yourself when you said that most home invaders are after cash and drugs. Who keeps cash at home besides people that can't deposit it in a bank?
I didn't say they hit up meth labs. They usually ring the doorbell, force their way in, and hold people at gun point demanding money or drugs. Prescription drugs to be exact. Sometimes they catch people off guard when they return home, and occasionally they just kick in the door.

I'm quite sure that burglaries outweigh home invasions/robberies by far.
Everywhere on the planet.
(Well, maybe not some Sao Paolo favela.)

Because it's the path of least resistance to observe some potential target houses, see what (expansive) cars they drive, what jobs they have (e.g. lawyers or medical doctors listed in the phonebook, and then making a call to see if someone is at home.

That's exactly how it happened in our residental estate with single family houses.
Three got burgled when they were on holiday.
They were a lawyer, a doctors and an ex-university rector, all of them renowned locally and frequently appearing in the newspapers.
The burglars didn't destroy anything, just forced open a back porch doors, and only stole valuables like paintings and coin collections.

If some had been at home, they would have known that.

I don't think anybody said otherwise. But home invasions do happen, and with increasing regularity.

You can load either, I think usually the top fires first.

Whats the point?
Two barrels for two clays, or one and a spare for one clay.
In a side-by-side the left barrel recoils to the left and vice versa, over and under not so much, its easier to gt the barrels aligned in the manufacturing process, .
You can also have a different choke in each barrel, with a two trigger gun you can select as you shoot - a wider pattern is more likely to get a quick hit at close range, a tight pattern may be more likely at longer range.

yeh top first. it's also far far easier to shoot clays/birds with an over under. recoil is a little stronger than a side/side, but you use them for foxes/badgers etc.

Why does the SbS need a trigger for each barrel while the O/U needs only one for both?
And how would the single trigger system work when quickly firing both barrels: pull -> release -> pull or pull part way back -> pull all the way back?

SxS shotguns don't need two triggers, but many of the older ones like that one have them because that's how they used to be made for simplicity, a lot of newer ones don't have two triggers or external hammers like that one, but those features can come as options on some models.  Single trigger shotguns simply can't fire both barrels at one time because they semi-automatically fire from one barrel on one pull and the other on the next so it would only be pull, release, pull again and just fire the shots consecutively rather than concurrently.  Over-unders also automatically revert to the top barrel whenever you crack them open to reload(at least on the ones I've fired) so you can just keep firing and reloading only one shot if it's for trap shooting.  They are functionally the perfect skeet/trap gun as long as everything works right.  Sometimes one barrel can have different firing characteristics from the other if the gun wasn't maintained or built properly and in other cases sometimes one barrel won't even fire(my uncle's SxS shotgun occasionally does this)

I prefer side by side shotguns for the look, they're also usually a lot a cheaper than over-unders for some reason

I can't afford those nice hunting/skeet shooting shotguns. The one ted posted when explaining over/under is awesome and I'd love it for skeet shooting but I need something practical for both home defense AND skeet shooting.

What's a sweet looking shotgun that's cheap and fullfills both those roles?
And above your tomb, the stars will belong to us.
