The game was half as meaningful as the pro-bowl before that rule.

who says an all star game has to be meaningful?

Then why even waste everyone's time and play it? Just give everyone a 4-day break and do away with the game and HR Derby.

Exactly.
The pro bowl is a waste of time and money.
I am personally for the idea of the AS game deciding the Home-Field advantage IF they have it. If it's just for fun, get rid of it and give everyone a few days off.

Trouble is, professional sports are a business and above everything else (yes even winning championships), they want to make money. So they have a game that brings is profitable and it stays. There's no getting past that. The promoters, players, owners, etc., see dollar signs and you might as well complain to a brick wall.

What does it matter to you? Did you see the stadium? It was full on both days. It was even full for the stupid celebrity softball game. Obviously the people thought enough of the festivities to fill the stadium and look happy about it. Sports are entertainment, and sports players are entertainers. It's their job. Did they look miserable to be there at the all-star game? Didn't look like it to me. Seemed like they were enjoying themselves and the chance to be recognized as one of the best in their profession. I made a few all-star games in little league and I didn't turn down the invitation just because the game didn't count for anything. Playing baseball is fun. Playing baseball with a team full of really good players is even more fun.

No one forces you to watch the ASG or the Pro Bowl, and the players have a million opportunities to come up with an excuse not to show up if they really don't want to go. Should the game count for home field advantage? Who cares. Before they did it this way home field used to alternate every year between the leagues. It has roughly the same chance of doing so under the current format as well.

Wait how did we get into the idea that I hate the all-star game?

Personally I like it. It was kinda dumb when they weren't playing for anything because a lot would back out or not play very hard (again, this is fine but it detracts a bit but who cares). I think the idea that they play for home-field advantage is interesting if nothing else, sort of an odd rule thrown in there to give the game a bit of some incentive. If they take it out later, fine. God I really don't give that much of a shit.
I was more retorting to Ken's comment on how stupid that rule is and saying how before it existed the game wasn't taken quite as seriously.

The Pro-Bowl on the other hand IS a waste in my opinion. Either have it in the middle of the season (but you can't because of possible injuries) or not at all.

bye bye ichiro

You did well here but you're getting old and you stopped producing. thanks for everything but there's no room in baseball for sentiments, especially when you suck as bad as we do.

I didn't seen any rumors at all leading up to that trade. Cashman's office usually leaks like a sieve when he's about to make a move.

yeah came as a surprise to everyone here too. god knows with the trade history between the mariners and yanks (well everyone), he'll hit .400 or break some sort of record.

I guess this gets them off the hook from offering another Griffey contract.

that was more or less an honorary contract. "just play here for 1 more year and end your career here" I don't think anybody in the PNW regrets that whole deal.

Maybe not, but it was pretty awkward at the end

I guess the free-ride is over for Ich now that he's with the Yanks. That's probably what he needs now since he's basically been bent over for and babied since he got to seattle.

All-told I don't think theres anything wrong with this trade. He wanted to go so we let him but there's no hard feelings. We were almost guaranteed to get rid of him at the end of the season so it's just 3 months early. Maybe the M's got the slightly short end of the stick with 2 nobodies but heck, maybe they'll turn out good. The Yankees got an outfielder they needed and filled a hole in the lineup.

We're like the redsox except with 1/4 of the support. The difference is our fans were born fans and their fans became fans in 2004 and don't know what a "bandwagon" is (or what 4+4 is).

Haha free ride?  Guy won rookie of the year and MVP in his first season.  Set a hits record.  Has been stellar (but declining) for 10 years.  He's probably done more for the Mariners over the last 10 years than anyone else.

so wrong. 2004 brought all the pink hats though.
