The latest EF lens is Canon's 'pancake' 40mm. i bought one last Saturday, and so far i'm impressed;

From the reviews i had read, it was supposed to be a Godsend for videographers, but honestly, not using the video capability of my camera much.

For US $199, a fixed focal length sharp walk around lens fills the bill, and if video's your thing, so much the better.

what makes it especially good for video? sorry, it must sound like a really stupid question. doesn't a shorter lens make for wide-angle shooting?

this lens is wider than the 50mm, but that's not a bad thing for video. For the newer Canon bodies (T4i, or 650d) Canon is claiming full time autofocus. This lens has a stepping motor, as opposed to the ultrasonic motor Canon has used in the past for autofocus.

i've found this lens to be sharp from center to edges, up to about f/11. It also has good color reproduction, with no artifacts or fringing.
