You could take the kicks simultaneously (assuming we could clone the goaly 5 times).
You could take them in secret so no one knew the order they were kicking or what the result was until all kicks had been taken.
You could have 1 team take all 5 of their shots then the other team take all 5 of theirs.

The order is completely and utterly irrelevant.

All these 'ifs and buts' means nothing, fact is Portugal missed 2 and Spain missed 1. Game over.

But it's not done this way. They take turns. Why this makes a difference is because of it's there's absolutely no way the other team is going to win, even if they score the rest of their goals, they don't take them. IF everyone HAD taken 5 PK's yesterday AND Ronaldo scored, the outcome would have been 4-3. Still a loss yes, BUT if Ronaldo's goal (in this alternate universe where they're each allowed to take 5 PK's) had been 1st or 2nd. They would have actually (in OUR universe) taken their last shot. At this point it would have been 4-3 with one shot left for Port with the option to tie. Yes, if the same person that was replaced with Ronaldo shot and again missed it would still be a loss for them but they would have had the option to tie. THIS is why it's better to put "sure" makes at the beginning.
