How do you re-enable on-board video?

I had to leave my friends house before installed the drivers properly and something happened when he disabled on-board video so neither one displays anything and the monitor doesn't detect a display device. Is there a way to re-enable it from the outside? If not, how else can I re-enable it or get the thing to work again?

You have to find it on the mainboard, it should say someting like "clrcmos" or something to that effect. Get a little jumper thing like the one you see on the hard drive for moving slave-->matser. Shut down the computer, put your jumper on the clcmos, boot it up for about 20 seconds, then shut it down, remove the jumper and try it.

You don't need to remove the battery if you jumper the clear cmos. There are still capacitors on the mobo that store electricity so removing the battery only partially clears it and it's just a shitty way to do it. If your mobo doesn't have a clear cmos, then do the battery thing. Be sure to use a paperclip or something metal to jump the pos/neg battery terminals too so it clears out those capacitors.

These are jumpers. The motherboard uses the same ones so if you borrow your HD's, be sure to remember where you got it

ok find the book for your motherboard.. no book? right

if you do have the book search for "clearing the cmos" and it should show u the location of the jumpers

first turn off the psu
unplug the psu
open the case
earth yourself on the case (touch it)
search the motherboard for a sticking out plastic object which looks something like this

That image shows the battery too

with cmos reset or clrcmos written in small white writing next to it

there will likely be 3 pins
it will be on 2 of them, move it so it covers the centre pin and the pin that was uncovered

now look for the flat "hearing aid"battery and carefully remove it, it's important that you DO NOT touch both flat sides at once if you can help it, this can and will short it.
leave the battery out for a minimum of about 30 seconds,
replace battery,
put the plastic thing back on the 2 pins it was originally on
replace the side panel
plug psu back in
turn psu on
hit the power switch

if nothing displays on the monitor, turn off the pc
plug the monitor into the other display out
turn on the pc

still no luck.. report back here and we'll see what we can do

IMPORTANT: DO NOT BOOT THE SYSTEM WHILE THE JUMPER IS MOVED AS IT CAN/WILL SCREW THE MOTHERBOARD

Let's get this straight. I unplug everything, switch the jumper to the other side, take out the battery for 30 seconds or so, put it back, put the jumper back, and plug everything in. Did I get it right?

You don't have to do both.
You can do one or the other.
Either remove the battery for about 10 - 15 seconds or move the jumper for about 10 - 15 seconds.

And if you haven't done this yet, do you have the monitor plugged into the video card?
If onboard is disabled and you have a video card, just plug the monitor into the videocard and you should be able to get atleast 16-bit color on 800x600. then from there, install the video card drivers and whatever else you need and you should be fine.

I am a Computer tech and I have yet to see a mobo needing both.
And if he has a video card and is trying to use the disabled onboard, all he has to do is plug straight into the video card and he won't have to bother with resetting the CMOS.

If you have a videocard, at no point in time should you need to plug into the onboard, thus disabling it shouldn't mess anything up. Unless of course you're having display troubles and you need to test to see if it's a video card problem by plugging into the onboard.

And if you really were giong for "worst case scenario" then you should have said "you only need to do one or the other, but there are some cases where you might have to do both. So if doing one doesn't work, do both"

Anyways, some of the questions he is asking, I wonder if it's even a problem at all, or if he's just plugging into the onboard.

EDIT: Also, you don't have to disable onboard to have a properly working videocard. I leave mine enabled incase of emergencies.
