First off, leave all your " go with amd, its better" crap at the door. Thank you.

I'm going to do a little upgrade for my vid card and having a little issues figuring out what would be better for a budget.

I'm looking at either a 460 gtx, 560, or 560 SE. Supposedly the SE is between the 560 and 560 Ti, but the price is lower than a 560. And where would a 460 match up in all this?

If your budget is restricting you to a GTX460 in the NVIDIA field, do yourself a GIGANTIC favor and go AMD, whether or not you think it's crap. If you still want NVIDIA, a 560 Ti is the ideal upgrade for the money from a 9800GT, and I don't expect your system will take much more without severely bottlenecking.

I guess I would maybe go amd, however I have heard sometimes drivers not working correctly?

What would be the suggestions in the $120-140 range from newegg?

Nothing. Putting that much into a video card with that system would be a waste. If you can find another 9800 for cheap on craigslist, that would probably be your best option. But even then, you have one outdatded comp if you want to play newer games.

Ultimately, this.

He could potentially get some goodness out of a 560 Ti...barring sudden failures in his other old-as-dirt hardware. And even if they do fail, the 560 Ti could simply be incorporated into a newer rig.

Not really worth it to put any more money to that old PC. I am a little skeptical about putting something like 560 ti there even for short while, the PSU is probably piece of crap already.

If you absolutely must grab something for that PC right now, look for used GTX 2xx series which are practically half free and already overkill for that PC.

I'd still say GTX 560 Ti, as it's a part he could use if he's planning on building new any time soon, whereas a 2xx will just be more near-future shelf junk and hardly worth the upgrade from the last generation. Could ebay a 280 for $50-$100 if he insisted on messing with the second-hand market, I guess...but still hardly worth it.

Without knowing what kind of junk is used to power the PC, I won't recommend putting a $200 graphics card in it. $100 gets a GTX 460 already, no one in right mind would pay that much for 280.

Er.. why? If there's a better card at the pricerange you're looking at what does it matter if it's AMD or nVidia?

Show me your practically-free 2x0, then. ~$75 the average range ebay had them at. I didn't say it was a good price (terrible for the generation); it was more like something I'd expect to see at Fred Meyer. Best bet's a local computer repair shop.

And if you don't want to make a recommendation without knowing what's powering his PC, how could you suggest an upgrade at all?

8800GTX is a step up from the 9800GT, which is pretty much a poshed up 8800GT.

Well I figured it would come to upgrading the vid card would be a waste of money, so I guess Ill be waiting till I upgrade to a new pc.

Thanks for the input.

EDIT: The psu has been replaced recently to a corsair 600w from a hiper 450w.

Put a 40€ gfx card to old PC, not that big issue if something breaks. Put a 200€ gfx card and you don't want to take your chances anymore.
