b) it's a summer camp for goody two-shoes kids. middle-class kids that want to do something productive with their summer. a civics camp. encouraging citizenship. they're not all there chanting the party slogan and worshipping portraits of the current prime minister. they are there to do community work and to generally take part in their wider community and feel belonging, integration, compassion for their citizens. it is a positive and good thing, no matter which way you look at it. also of course it's great for the resumes of any young kids that are intending to have a career in politics or journalism or any public office. it's a way of 'taking part'. it's not some socialist dogma camp.

c) you are wrong. please go do some reading before you spout your mouth. it's horrifically insensitive considering you are talking about 77 dead kids here who were just trying to do something positive and community-minded with their summer vacation.

I, for one, am from the school of " periodically The Tree of Liberty must be fertilized with the blood of patriots and tyrants ".
And also, I am one that accepts that there are consequences for actions.

For example, if you are a douche politicians who gives not a shit for your citizenry, but instead is concerned with personable enrichment then you should be prepared to sacrifice your children on the alter of your own greed.

Meaning, they should be looking at their on actions, that led to the killers actions. There is a a cause and effect. He isn't crazy; he is acting as a person convinced his nation is besieged and dying. Political statements are sometimes painful to hear.

That's all it was; a political statement. Perhaps one some needed to hear.

Tampa is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live for people in their 20s. Miami is Miami. From the parts I have been, the two big metro areas, it doesn't seem all that different.

I might move to Tampa one day. I have a bunch of family down there so I won't be totally alone. The city won me over. Could use some more Asian girls though. But then again what place doesn't?

Old people move to Florida, its a well known fact in the US.  Its nice and warm, constantly summer like conditions so they can live relaxed lives without having to worry about snow and yard work.

Have you ever left your island? Have you ever traveled in the US? Do people in England normally send their kids to camp in Portugal for the summer? Because that's about the equivalent here. Except the argument is even flimsier because it's the same temperature here in the summer as it is in Florida, completely negating any need to summer in a warm environment. Do you have the same culture as those living on the Orkney Islands? They're different, yes? Well, different parts of the US have different cultures too. Amazing. Florida is southern redneck. Pulling up a news article about a summer camp in Florida is about as relevant as me pulling up an article about Portuguese summer camps when talking about Merry Ole England.

I know that.
My point was that these summer camps will be made up of people from across the US, so the fact that it is "full of rednecks/in the bible belt" is largely irrelevant.

so you're telling me there are no political or religious summer camps in the entire north-east? around all those middle-class areas? with all those competitive schools? and all those well-intending career parents? you're telling me there are no summer schools whatsoever? i'm just using the tea party example (which just so happens to be in florida) because it seems like your dream summer vacation. let's not get hung up on the tea party's shebang down in florida. it's far from the only summer camp in the states - i think we both know that.

regardless you are totally wrong about the whole summer camp thing, anyway. nobody here in europe considers voluntary citizenship exercises and community interaction a part of 'indoctrination'.

A summer camp for "young politicians" from Britain could be held in Portugal what influence would it have... They don't suddenly become Portuguese culturally/politically.

Florida is the 4th largest state and a huge amount of people who live in major urban centers here are either ex-northerners or kids of ex-northerners.  Only the panhandle/Jacksonville has any real "southern" influence.  The rest is probably closer to Las Vegas, a strange combination of crooks/business people kept afloat by the huge tourist industry.

Not really, the US is a big country and people are not willing to send their kids hundreds if not thousands of miles to go to some summer camp in Florida.  Of course there might be a few from up north but I would almost guarentee that they are all from the south/bible belt.

A) I'm not, nor have I ever been, a tea partier.
B) If people send their kids away to summer camp it is to those cliched camps on a lake in the woods where the boys sneak across the lake to steal their first kiss from a willing lass. It's either that or day camp.
C) I have never heard of any politically affiliated summer camp. Ever. Religious? Yes. Political? No. Politics and children are a big no no here.

So yes, I found the whole thing weird, and I said as much whenever this story first came out. Again, I don't agree with indoctrination of any sort and it really surprises me that you all seem to find it to be hunkydory. the point is that us citizens, of a us background subscribing to an american ideology, go to political summer camps. they are not an alien or socially repulsive concept there. they are just as popular as anywhere else. jay is trying to make out that people from florida are a different nationality and don't have the same patriotic beliefs or political philosophy. as if they vote for different political parties and live in a different parallel american universe. it's just him trying to evade the simple and undeniable fact that america is as big on political summer camps as anywhere else. which makes his disgusting comments about norway's affairs all the more idiotic. so now he's going to huff and puff for 2 pages trying to distance himself as much as possible from the americans that fly down to florida to attend a tea party camp... because oh they're a different sort of american.

it's not indoctrination
it's not indoctrination
it's not indoctrination

they are not young impressionable children
they are not young impressionable children
they are not young impressionable children

the thing you said about summer camps being for young kids/teens/adults to get together and sit around a campfire, kissing girls... is EXACTLY THE SAME THING THEY HAVE IN NORWAY. there's even a pathway on utoya island named colloquially by the kids that visit every year as "lover's walkway" or something, because it's just what the young people there do. you're picturing them in matching tan uniforms marching around singing socialist marching songs and praising the government - that just isn't so. it's a summer camp organised by the government to encourage young people to take part in their society, and to be politically active and socially engaged. there's nothing indoctrinating about it. there's nothing to say that everyone at that camp is a devout party-person and will vote for the ruling political party for the rest of their lives. it's a summer camp simply for people that take an interest in civics and politics. you're making out it's like a north korean propaganda camp or something. it's just not true.

why won't you listen to what you are being told? can you not accept being factually wrong?

also where did we say "america is awful"? you came into this discussion about a massacre saying norway is awful for organising camps. nobody said anything about america. nobody gives a fuck about america. i linked you an example because you act like your own shit doesn't stink when you have political summer-camps AS WELL. this discussion isn't about america and, frankly, we could give a shit if you guys have young republicans or tea-party associations.

so what about the northerners or mid-westerners that go to tampa for the summer camp? you think the only people going to attend are southerners? dude your tea party movement are nationwide and highly mobile / willing to spend big dollar to transport themselves to political events. you're trying to make out for convenience's sake that everyone at the beck summer school will be southern rednecks. we all know that's not the case.
