upper middle class usually hires domestic help to clean the house and watch the kids. sometimes go to the supermarket and whatnot but generally no. it's only the rich who have hired help to do basically e'eything.
i think a large percentage of our regular middle-class here have cleaners and domestic help. but i think work culture here is more time-demanding.

in South America it's pretty common for even the middle class to have domestic help as wellUzique wrote:

I think hiring help to do most of your domestic stuff is a bit higher than upper middle. Upper middle I would label as someone in a nice suburb, with a pretty big house, and drives a German car or Cadillac. Goes on vacations multiple times a year. Hires someone to do their lawn care. And shops at wholefoods /stereotyping
domestic help isnt an indicator of status. my mom hired a couple of house maids during my childhood when she wasnt even clearing 40 a year atthe time

There aren't a lot of Mexicans over here. The cost of domestic help is higher over here and is usually carried out by Poles.eleven bravo wrote:

bog-standard european middle-class. again, why the need for the super-modifier of 'upper'? there's nothing upper about having a suburban lifestyle and enjoying ordinary western comforts. i think it's just a way you americans like to try and distinguish between and one-up one another because you're all material snobs, without an aristocracy. oh and because nobody wants to be confined to the horrors of the 'working class' category, so the middle becomes a pointless everyone-included term.Macbeth wrote:

So glad to be moving back out this summer. Can finally start getting laid regularly again.
mostly salvadorians here
I have friends who have maids and gardeners and pool cleaners. It's more indicative of how much time they have/how lazy people are than their social status.
I think the modifiers come into play because there is such a huge gap between the bottom of the middle class and the top of the middle class.

i pride myself on knowing I'm a business major who actually proofreads and knows how to use proper English. I guess four years in a high school that placed a lot of emphasis on English will do that to you lol.Uzique wrote:

Internet keeps going down at work. Shit is so exciting.
over here being able to read and write in your native language is considered a perq of all standard education.Hurricane2k9 wrote:
