I hope they decide to release the (stable) PC version alongside the console versions with GTA V instead of 8 months later and unplayably laggy and crashy without several patches

GTA IV for PC took a long long time to get where it is, even after they patched all that initial stuff, it didn't even get the DLCs until much later when they were both already out on the 360.  I'm thinking this probably shouldn't happen this time around now that the majority of people are hip to the console favoritism bullshit and plus Rockstar knows how to use both Steam and Games for Windows - Live as distribution platforms now
Recall that GTA IV was originally slated for an Oct. '07 release, but was delayed to April '08, in what I think was some porting issues for PS3 or something along those lines. It was still in the earlier days of the "next-gen" consoles, and you can tell as the game still has that "next-gen shine" to its graphics, and the companies were still testing the waters. Secondly, the DLC packs where limited X360 exclusives (Microsoft payed $50 million to ensure this exclusivity to boost Xbox 360 I'd imagine. Sony had a similar agreement with Rockstar with the GTA III era games where they would be released on PS2 first for set limit, and when GTA III hit the shelves a lot of people bought a PS2 for that game) but they were released on PC at the same time the PS3 got them.

GTA IV for PC was handled by an entirely different studio (Rockstar Toronto) but it definitely felt rushed and the port was highly unoptimized to run on current-gen systems at those times (ie the game almost required a quad-core processor when most people where still running dual-core setups) and the lack of SLI/Crossfire support ruined the experience for many. However, by the third and fourth patch, the game was finally stable and playable on most systems. Today's current version (patch 1.0.7.0) is fine and playable, but it still feels like they really abandoned a half-finished PC port of a game - there are a lot of little things that could/should of been fixed, but it seems they just left it to modders to figure out. Meh.

Rockstar Leeds seems to be the new PC developer, as rumor has it they are hiring PC programmers, and were responsible for the LA Noire PC release which was, from what I've heard, pretty successful although I've never played the game. Perhaps they'll be tasked with the GTA V port and it won't be a mess during release.

Any ideas of a release date yet?
Nothing solid yet - some are saying a Q1/2 2013 release, while others are hopeful for a Q4 2012 release.

Well a different developer with a successful PC port, or at least one with no major complaints as far as anybody's heard, is very good news for getting a working port or an on-time one.  Hopefully they don't do this exclusive bargaining bullshit again either; it's acceptable for DLCs but for entire cross-console/PC ports of the game, it's just fucked up and ridiculous

As for the release date, a Rockstar Employee put GTA V as an October 2012 release on their resumee of games they worked on, so people are saying that's when it'll be released now.

I wish some sort of car tuning would be in V. It would be a bit more special to mess around in a car (or bike) you got to design. Kinda like fiddling around in SA with lowriders.

And more goofy characters like the stoner played by Peter Fonda in SA. The wild goose chase was so hilarious even tho nothing happened during driving around in San Fierro

i sorta do, but aside from garage save-reload trophys i never found a use for tuned cars in SA. cars have always been disposable.

That's pretty much what Saints Row 3 is - all the wacky shit in a totally free sandbox, which is cool for people who love that.

I'm glad they've gone with a more serious, cinematic feel with the series lately, it's a new twist to the series and keeps it interesting.

I wish they'd stayed with the GTA 1/2 mentality. Any GTA in which you can't mow down a line of Hare Krishnas is a GTA that's fundamentally lacking.

It most certainly was not. You got the pvc suite and the giant dildo after dating that one chica. Riding the Sanchez with that suit on was so kinky, not to mention riding a bike

So true.
It all started when they crapped their pants and removed one mission in GTA3, where you need to blast some building in Liberty City, because it was released a few weeks after September 11th 2001.
Later, when they got scared after the Hot Coffee incident in GTA:SA and released a Cold Coffee patch, for something which was never available to anyone without hacking the game.

The Scottish DMA Design getting bought up by the American Rockstar Games surely influenced that a lot.

Well, if they hadn't removed the Hot Coffee mini-game, SA would've had an Adult-Only ESRB rating(in the US) which many major retail stores refuse to sell which obviously would've hurt sales quite a bit.  It wasn't so much about the political correctness there as it was the profits I think

Well, but how could the ESRB increase the rating anyway, for a single, non-functional feature, that can only be enable with hacks?

The ESRB don't subsequently change the rating of a game because someone creates a mod that changes the game.
E.g. nude patches for Tomb Raider games come to my mind.

Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure that was the actual scenario and Rockstar had to start making copies of the game that didn't have any remnants of the Hot Coffee game in them.  The issue was that the Hot Coffee wasn't just a mod, it was something that was already in the game, it just had to be enabled through some hacks

If GTAV lacks hookers like they had in IV, I'll be royally pissed.
RDR had sluts on every corner but you couldn't do them because John was married (to a whore himself) and Jack was a fag.

It looks like the PC port of Max Payne is pretty buggy and has a lot of issues with PC-specific things like which OSes it works on, mouse sensitivity troubles, and not initially being able to detect how much RAM a graphics card has, hopefully it's at least stable and hopefully it's not this bad with GTA V's PC port

The controversy stemmed from the fact that the content already existed in the game - basically it was a cut feature of the game (something a developer likely added early on) and instead of removing it, they just disabled it.  The infamous "hot coffee" mod just re-enabled this feature - the cutscenes, controls, etc. already existed.  Add to the fact that people were releasing Xbox and PS2 specific "hot coffee" mods, the ESRB had to step in.  Rockstar released GTA: SA V2.0 in response - basically the exact same game but with the sex scenes removed entirely.

Other mods (like Tomb Raider, Sims, etc. nude mods) are often entire creations of the mod's developer - they create the graphics, animations, etc. and since this content is additional and not part of the original game, it doesn't qualify a re-rating.

Nothing yet, but everyone is expecting something soon since Max Payne 3 has released.

It seems like any Rockstar PC game takes at least 3-4 patches before it's stable enough to enjoy.  GTA IV wasn't good until the 1.0.3.0/1.0.4.0 patches.

I'm just glad they've set down the framework - a PC release of Max Payne 3 with DX11 and higher quality visuals makes it promising that GTA V will come to PC.  I'd be worried if they had been doing nothing...

I had no doubt in my mind about them releasing a PC port of GTA V, I just wonder if it'll be at the same time or fairly immediately after the console versions were released like Max Payne 3 was and also what we'll be seeing as far as the initial quality of the port goes.  Somebody said earlier that the quality of the PC port varies by which studio is working on it for Rockstar games particularly and they're supposedly using the best one for GTA V, I also wonder if that's the same studio that did the Max Payne 3 port.  I'm actually thinking about getting Max Payne 3 any day now to see for myself how the quality is and of course to actually play it, lol.

One other positive thing of note is how Rockstar has implemented DirectX 11 capability for both L.A. Noire(In a patch I think) and Max Payne 3(already in the initial release) so this will very likely be the first Grand Theft Auto to be rendered in DirectX 11.  Hopefully this will improve the the performance and stability for people who play the game in DirectX 11 mode since it's a lot more PC-optimized than DirectX 9.  I seriously have to get an 11 card one of these days
