Yes, people are treated differently. If someone attacks a black man he faces a more severe punishment than if he attacks a white man. It is precisely the same as affirmative action.
What it does is perpetuate those divisions by creating protected classes.FatherTed wrote:

Finally you have hit upon something which I consider to be a flaw in legal systems the world over. Sentencing in high profile cases will often reflect public opinion. Just like happened following the riots - all the rioters got extra harsh sentences because there was public demand for it.
But then looking at the bigger picture, what is the legal system there to do other than to enforce conformation to what society as a whole deems to be acceptable? Which essentially is mob rule, which is what democracy is.

The legal system is supposed to be a bulwark against mob rule. Public opinion is supposed to be irrelevant. That's how it works over here.Bertster7 wrote:

The sentences should've been the same as they would've been any other time. If your society felt that the normal punishments weren't harsh enough, then those are what needed changing, not special treatment based on public outcry. That's completely absurd.FatherTed wrote:

you live in a country that has the death penalty in some states, and you don't see the benefit of imposing tougher sentences on high profile crimes to discourage and/or stem off copycats as something worth using? i've already said this guys sentence is disproportionate but nonetheless he should have been punishedJay wrote:

For directing the word 'cunt' at a person? You're sending a guy to jail because he has bad manners.FatherTed wrote:

Hurling sexual and racist slurs and laughing about how someone is dead when they've just collapsed having a heart attack on national TV is what people didn't like.
It's absolutely ludicrous to send someone to jail for inane shit like that. The guy was drunk.
If that happened to me I'd turn to crime.

Again, bad manners. Get the fuck over it. The way your culture carries on about soccer I thought this stuff was normal. You encourage soccer hooliganism. Now you want to punish someone for something all of you do? Fucking L.O.L.Bertster7 wrote:

again, you won't find many people in the UK saying his sentence was appropriate, but the vast majority will agree he needed some form of punishment.

I also find it hilarious how Europe looks own on America for being less progressive while Europe has far more pernicious and prevalent racism than America.
Well, I'd expect no less from a populace that has allowed itself to be disarmed and live inside of a police surveillance network.

From your own state media. The UK has some of the toughest gun control laws in the world. If you want to own a gun, it is very difficult to do so.
In short, it has been designed to put as many barriers in the way as possible and to assume the worst, rather than hope for the best.
