Pretty incredible result. For a former Government to be down to seven seats in a 89-seat parliament is pretty insane, not to mention with people like Andrew Fraser thrown out. Doesn't this mean they don't even qualify as an official party?
Kind of hoped Kate Jones would keep Newman out of Ashgrove just to see what happened but there was never any real chance of that. Also, Palaszczuk the potential Opposition Leader? I hope not, her name is hard to spell.
Can't stand Tony's gloating though. Fuck he's a prick. I hope Australians cotton onto that fact before the next election. I'm all for a Coalition Government but the notion of an Abbott Prime Minister is sickening.

I wouldn't disagree but in a Australian/New Zealand context Head of State is just a ceremonial position and has no real political power that can be used freely, (even by Sir John Kerr,) so it's not like its a massive affront to democracy. The Governor General, (i.e. the person who actually does stuff 'cause Queen Liz doesn't,) is replaced every five years or so and is selected by the PM. Still it's no worse than a system in which two parties select two candidates and a group of electors distributed by state population acting on behalf of the voters of their state, (though they have the power to vote differently,) can elevate the winner to a position which does have a lot of political power, (both domestically and internationally.) A system in which a candidate with more individual votes can still lose to a candidate with over half a million votes less than him.

And yet QLD has had an ALP government for ~20 years. The racists must not have been voting those years. To be honest I think it's pretty similar in most states. You will have bogan/racist people everywhere and more concentrated amounts of them in some places (eg Far North QLD or Western NSW). QLD may be slightly worse than NSW/VIC in some ways, but the rest of the country is no better.
