A large home with a basement and a green house. I plan to grow organic marijuana when I retire. Also I will put one of those little Catholic shrines someplace isolated.

Dream home in 2021 is basically something you can toss together in a weekend on the Sims. That's as good as it gets. Buying sucks rn. I live in a small-ish place and am kind of sick of claustrophobic spaces, although I'm glad to at least have it.

Actual "dream" home: affordable, weathertight (good windows, no blown insulation (I'd like a usable attic)), plumbing and electrical in working order and non-damaged. No asbestos history, no old lead paint buried under several layers of newer paint. Good laundry/mud room. 2-3 bed (can use spares for office, library), 1.5 bath at least. Generously windowed parlor and a dining room nice would be nice, separated from the kitchen and living room. Roomy pantry. Enough kitchen counterspace for a few gadgets and work, correct GFCI outlets frequently spaced (more outlets around the place in general), island with spare sink would be mint. Disconnected workshop would be nice, properly insulated, wired, with a water supply for a sink/eyewash station. Small greenhouse somewhere for keeping stuff safe from critters. Detached garage. Basement nice, but optional (would be great to have some sort of ramped egress outside for easier access). Could turn it into a game room. Plenty of haul-away pianos, pool tables on craigslist. No deck without a hot tub, like why even bother.

Integrated LED Christmas lights would be a very suburbs cherry on top. Why didn't jay install those instead of a deck?

Good weather, not in an area prone to natural disasters. Blue state/town, reasonable property taxes. Within minutes of a fire station. At least 10-15 minutes away from a highway. No rental properties nearby constantly cycling problem tenants in and out. No aggressive neighbors. No noisy businesses open at night with their loud machinery. No HOI to be under the bootheel of. Real pie-in-the-sky stuff.

Also a a binding guarantee from the local police that if they chase a walmart shoplifter into my home, they won't destroy it and offer me a paltry $5000 in compensation.

A lot of millennials will never be able to start families. I don't want kids but I can imagine how embittering it must be to want kids but being priced out.

Must be even more embittering to see immigrants families come into the country, buy homes, etc. Not their fault, and nothing gives any American the right to look down upon or mistreat immigrants. Children of any kind is how I pay the bills after all. But if of all people I pick up this signal I can imagine how others react to it.

Now excuse me while I hook up with more Coptic girls.

At least some articles are real about it in tone (at least) even if wrong-minded in some approaches, rather than just spinning out more raggedy nonsense about avocado toast or whatever. From googling "can't afford a family":

2019 - The US birthrate is the lowest it's been in 32 years, and it's partly because millennials can't afford having kids
https://www.businessinsider.com/us-birt … 019-5?op=1

The US birthrate is at its lowest in 32 years, Bill Chappell for NPR reported, citing a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The decline is represented in nearly all racial and age groups.

While experts found these findings surprising in light of a healthy US economy and job market, some told Chappell that job security, today's political climate, and a negative view on America's future are contributing to the decline.

"Not a whole lot of things are going good, and that's haunting young people in particular, more than old people," Dowell Myers, a demographer at the University of Southern California, told Chappell.

Many parents expressed their thoughts via social media in response to the report, citing high insurance costs, the search for childcare, and lack of parental leave as challenges to having kids, Chappell wrote.

Their sentiments state the obvious: Kids are expensive. And they've only gotten more expensive as the cost of living continues to rise.
2021 - Millennials Can’t Afford Homes And That’s A Big Problem
https://amac.us/millennials-cant-afford … g-problem/

For years, it’s been difficult for millennials to catch a break, especially when it comes to being able to afford a home. And it’s only getting worse in 2021 for that generation, comprised of individuals born between 1981 and 1996. Some have claimed that millennials don’t want to own a home, and are satisfied with renting. Nothing could be further from the truth—a whopping 89% of millennials say they want to own a home. They just can’t afford it.
This one's amusing because of some of the haughty comments below. "Lies! Both of MY daughters own homes."

I have a comment for that "if only millennials wanted to work" thing, though there's no way I'm registering there to post it.

Some of my best, most dedicated and capable trainees in past job roles have been in my age group. A lot of of the older guys just didn't want to conform to company methods. A couple even tried a weird power coup, lol.

Millennials want to work and be paid fairly for work. People are tired of being asked for ten years of experience on something that's only been in the industry for maybe three. Sick of unnecessarily crappy, abusive jobs that have crushed generations of their family.

lmao

I expect to be treated with respect, given a chance to advance, and be compensated for it. My career is almost like a medieval guild in terms of low respect/wage work until you become fully inducted. I am glad to be on the other side of it. Annoyed by people who don't work their low position hard.

It sounds like a lot more when you put it like that. It is kind of funny in retrospect, but I am not a head honcho exec who rebuffed an attempt by the board to push them out. So I'd revise this to them testing my authority within the company to see if they can be their own boss on my project that they are a team member on. Sometimes shouting was involved. I've never been shouted at by a fellow millennial company person.

I didn't mind if someone wanted to seek higher autonomy on a job. If they could do it, it made my job easier. But there needs to be an order and some sort of official status about it. A supervisor can't coordinate if everyone just goes off-plan and does their own (wrong) thing. Really inconvenient, inefficient timing to test that in the middle of a project, even if you are older and think you know better. Not to discourage advice. If I had a guy who had knowledge outside of my field of expertise, I'd defer to his judgment and go about making everything else run smoothly.

Currently I don't really have a traditional sort of job title at the company. I wear a lot of hats. So hat rack? Teams are solid enough that they can do most work on their own, and the exec who enjoys micromanaging can micromanage more complex projects without my bothering. I take care of loose ends.

There must be some sort of HR politics/shenanigans at your condom recycling plant in Michigan. Crazy Neddy won't stop using them as finger gloves to go booga-booga at the receptionist.

my studio in gangnam is pretty nice and well-appointed. high-tech with all the mod cons. for a nation who are effectively forced to live in high-density housing, they've certainly learned to make the apartment concept as commodious as possible. i have a really nice space to sleep, cook, work, exercise, etc, in. and there's about 15 convenience stores, food markets, butchers, restaurants, etc. all within a 2 minute walk.

the problem is that the average price per sq pyeong (3.3 metres) for property in gangnam (and seoul generally) is $40,000. which is a particularly sobering thought when you consider the strength of the won to the dollar, and that the average per capita salary in korea is $34,400.

the price of an apartment south of the river in seoul, in the roughly 11 districts comprising gangnam, has risen 84x in the last 40 years. take that in. an 84-fold increase in value.

The house next to me sold for over double what I paid, but it has a pool and about 300 more sq ft. I'm at the point now where I'd rather just sit pat and wait until I can retire somewhere in the countryside. I couldn't care less about flipping my home or trying to cash out yet. It's not worth it to me to go through the hassle just to sell my townhouse to some speculator fuck.

you see a lot of very old – which in korea is about 40 years; i think the average lifespan of a building in korea is 24 years, which is utterly barmy – ramshackle buildings and old-style korean 'villas' in the middle of seoul. normally with some lonely old person living in it. they're basically just squatting on the land and watching the value rise and keeping a safe nest egg for their children and grandchildren. any old person who has been living in the inner districts of seoul since the 1980s is now a de-facto millionaire. some of the houses they live in are properly dilapidated, and will be nestled in between all these high-tech gleaming multipurpose buildings, hipster cafés and bistros, etc. it's really odd. the city is like this weird fast-evolving protean organism.

So my parents bought their house for $125,000 or $150,000 back in 2000. They just listed the house for $650,000. The realtors were confident they could get that for the home. Ridiculous. I won't be able to own a home until I am an old man and living on my marijuana homestead in the great plains.

My parents are getting back together. Moving to South Carolina together. That's good.
