You guys should just pay us to cover your military commitments for you. Seriously. We already do cover you guys in the great geopolitical scheme of things and we need the money. We could then use the money to provide military related jobs to bring down our unemployment. The money you guys save outsourcing to us you can roll back into your social services.

It would be a great system. Too bad it would never happen.
Except we can't trust you, eg the Falklands war.

well, if you're expecting us to do it out of the goodness of ourhearts, no.
We stopped doing that ages ago.

Now, if it were a business arrangement, with contractual and monetary obligations...
Of course you could trust the American Businessman

Yugoslavia was a clusterfuck. Kosovo and Macedonia, turned out ok. Preventative action, in our backyard.

Well, to be fair, our runways are left-handed runways.
You all would try landing on them backwards, screwing up the Feng Shui of the concrete.

US GDP is more dependent on the price of oil than most other countries - but it would fuck up everyone to some extent.

Not necessarily, the detail of fiscal union may have to change a lot.

Really the best thing would be for the 'Euro' to exist separately to national currencies for trading purposes.

everyone's gonna love this

"The German novelist and Nobel laureate Günter Grass has come under intense criticism after publishing a poem saying that Israel, not Iran, was the Mideast’s greatest threat to world peace, Der Spiegel Online reported on Wednesday."

"In the poem, titled “What Must Be Said” and published in Germany’s Suddeutsche Zeitung and several other European newspapers on Wednesday, Mr. Grass said he was tired of “Western hypocrisy” for calling for an end to Iran’s nuclear program while tolerating Israel’s own secretive nuclear program, which has been widely discussed but never officially confirmed."

"“Why did I wait until now at this advanced age and with the last bit of ink to say: The nuclear power Israel is endangering a world peace that is already fragile?” Mr. Grass, 84, wrote, after noting the German government’s recent decision to sell Israel additional submarines with what the poem described as the ability “to send all-destroying warheads where the existence of a single nuclear bomb is unproven.”"

They don't need to.

The US invariably gets into a quagmire proxy war. Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq.

Why blink?

Because the Russians are having delusions of Soviet grandeur?

They're searching for relevance on an US/EU/China world stage.

i dunno much about 'delusion of soviet grandeur' but if you want to discuss the 'world-stage' it seems to me like the EU aren't really on it. it's more like china/us world stage. soon to be the china world-stage. i wouldn't say russia are the only people straining for relevance. the us will be straining for it too in a generation.

dunno. china has some pretty deep social and economic issues that are going to crop up in a big way in a decade or two.

i really struggle to see the US straining for relevance - ever, unless a dissolution of the union occurs to some extent. not because of freedom or democracy or anything like that, simply because of the immense natural advantages the us has (resources, climate, population, size, access to oceans etc etc). also worth noting that china is actually quite resource poor for a country of its size.
