What does one need to shoot the moon and space pics in general? I have the 200mm f2.8 Sigma on my Canon EOS 1000D, so I can zoom in somewhat, but the results are shiny crap. Do I need some filters or do I just have to fiddle with the settings some more? I turned the f as down as I could but that didn't help jack schitt. Got clear skies right now and coming up next week and I would have a great opportunity to take good shots.

Yes fiddle with your settings more. Quicker shutter, lower ISO. Film is free now-a-days so shoot away. You'll find the sweet spot.. also do be afraid to correct in post. Daily back the highlights, bump up the contrast.. should bring in the details.
