shotguns are cheap, practical for other things (managing land f.ex), hunting and quite hard to go on a killing spree in a school with. it's worth mentioning we still can have hanguns, but that's mostly for target shooters or really rich people.

well no because initially there, you were implying we pretty much flat-out couldn't have guns. and we can. the main reason a lot of people over here don't have them is probably they feel secure enough not to need them. and the majority of gun owners i know bought them for work or recreational reasons.

Sounds like here. Only 25% of Americans own a gun of any type, and most of them live in rural areas, not cities. You're more likely to get hit by a bus in a city than get shot. I don't hear anyone trying to ban buses (except me, I hate the fucking things)

They're quite good actually. If you use a smaller shot they won't penetrate walls which keeps innocents safe.

That said, not everyone can use a shotgun. They're big, heavy, and bulky with a huge kick. My fiancee would probably get knocked down shooting one. A handgun would make a lot more sense for her when it comes to defending our home.
A .410 shotgun is pretty mild, a handgun bullet will go through multiple walls.

Depends on the wall, but .22lr is highly penetrative, not that a .22 is really practical for self defence.

from personal experience i could tell you that 9 times out of 10, a .22lr will not even pass through a dictionary

Which is still different from pentrating drywall and very different from a .410.
.22lr can travel kilometres and still be deadly.
From personal experience .357 magnum typically won't go through a telephone directory, its still immensely powerful and more penetrative than .44 magnum, .32 will sometimes penetrate further than both of these.

Most Euros can own hanguns BTW, just not Britain - except Northern Ireland....
