obviously i responded nicely, but i don't know why they expect people to just drop their association with america to join the IDF just because they're jewish
they have 200K active duty soldiers and so many more on reserve and they're a country of less than 10 million. really think they can stop the "make aaliyah and join the IDF!" shpiel

Because it's effective. You know how insular a lot of the Jewish communities on Long Island and in NYC are They identify a million times more with their Jewishness than anything else.Poseidon wrote:

pretty much. our 26 year old tour guide was. i mean it's VERY rare you'd be able to get out of military service, and it's hard to get a job if you do.
you do your few years of service then get money from the government to travel the world. then you have to return for 1 month every year until you're 40 or so to do training, since you're still considered reserve
it's a very safe country to be in right now though. felt safer there than i do here on long island

I was friends with two former IDF guys in college. One was an American born that got sucked in on his birthright trip and drove trucks for the IDF, and the other was Israeli born and spent five years in their Hostage Rescue teams. He was fucking hardcore.
