Shoppin for a new VID CARD :D need your help

Hey guys I was wondering if you guys could help me with selecting one. I'm thinking nvidia, since bf2 runs best on it (bf2 was designed and tested on it, apparently).

The problem is, there are so many variations of geforce 7800 e.g.

dis: eVGA GeForce 7800 GTX KO PCI-E SLI Video Card 256-P2-N533-AX, 256MB DDR3, HDTV Encoder, w/ VIVO & Dual DVI-I. ds-dh

so: BFG GeForce 7800 GT OC PCI-E SLI Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, Call of Duty 2 Bundled! w/ HDTV, VIVO & Dual DVI-I. ds-dh

eVGA e-GeForce 7800 GS 256-A8-N505-AX Video Card, 256 MBDDR3, AGP 8X, w/ VGA, DVI-I, S-Video Port, ds-dh

And I have ZERO idea what the difference is between them.

And also, I have 1.5 gb RAM and 2.2 ghz processor. Would this bottleneck the performance of the geforce 7800? Do you think I will be able to set all my settings on High? (plus shadows and dynamic lighting )

And if anyone knows a nice online site where you can buy the card at a good price that'd be great.

Is it an AMD processor or Intel? Also, on a sidenote you cant go wrong with evga or bfg.

yeah if its AMD you'll be fine, if your processor is intel you will not be fine.
if you can afford it get the 7900 or get the radeon1900xt from ATI, thats what i have and its a mighty fine card.
Bf2's shadows are slightly dodgy with ATI but you soon get over it.

The shadows are dodgy with Nvidia as well.

Is your machine pre-built or did you build it yourself? If it was prebuilt (dell, hp, etc.) what is the model number? If it is custom built what motherboard do you have?

This is important because of the three cards you mentioned, two will plug into one type of slot (PCI-E) and the other will plug into the older AGP. Wouldn't want you buying a card that won't plug into your current setup

I didn't notice the last card is AGP.
OP, You should be able to get a 7900gt for about the same price and is MUCH faster. I almost pulled the trigger on one selling on newegg for $265 after a $30 MIR. I've read a couple places now that the 7900gt's are not quite as reliable as the 7800 series... not sure though... since I have a 7800gt now and I'm pulling between 70 and 100fps in BF2 I decided against an upgrade right now.

why does it matter what cpu he has?

as for the cards, the GTX os the better card - the BFG card is only the GT version, so no matter how well it's been overclocked in the factory, it'll still be worse than the GTX. Having said that, go for a 7900 series card - they are even better. Look for BFG or XFX cards as these manufacturers overclock the cards in the factory.

I would go with the GTX. Either way though, I mean the GT version has CoD 2 bundeled in it (which is a cool game, BF2 is better IMO though).

It matters a lot which cpu he has. A 2.2 GHZ AMD chip is a lot faster than a 2.2 GHZ intel chip usually.

7900 is the best bang for buck card. Get this if you don't plan upgrading for awhile.

7600 is an option you can go with if you plan on upgrading to DX10 when it comes out. It's a cheaper and weaker card but you won't be as pissed off selling this for half it's value compared to the 7900.

I think if you wanted a Very solid And powerfull video card that would last even through to the new Windows Vista and the new games get yourself and X1900XT or X1900XTX
Either 256MB or 512MB

Thats what I am going to get cause I got this 7800GT and its not as great as everyone says it is
not for me anyway

but Nvidia or ATI its your choice

7800 series are killed by nvidia. they are not being produced anymore, i would go for 7900gt as it is WAY better than 7800gtx

My processor is Intel. Mine was a custom made desktop made by a company that did custom made computers... So far I've added a USB 2.0 card in and a new vid card (my old 6600 gt nvidia). That's all the modifications I've done to it. I'm gonna go find out if my motherboard can support AGP or PCI-E. Will I be having troubles if I have an Intel 2.2 ghz? Will that bottleneck a super card like 7900gt or should I settle for something easier, like GS 7800?

EDIT: My motherboard's from 2003 so I'm thinking I'm gonna need an AGP one. Do the new ones come with AGP? I know my motherboard's old because I had to buy one of the old kind of RAMs when I was updating, and not DDRAM.

wait, firstly, what kind of slot u using? PCi-e or AGP. coz they are 2 differnt slots. a 2.2ghz intel will def bottleneck the card. can we have a full specs of ur system so we can help u more

it has to be an AGP slot, as PCI-E didn't come around until.. late 2004?

and to answer your question, the higher-end cards do not come in AGP anymore as it is a dying standard.

if ur board doesnt use ddr ram... dont bother the upgrade... agp is dead. period. i would get a good decent system with pci-e. wait for release of intels new cpu conroe which is uber awsome that even made me go ZOMG. as upgrading to ddr2 ram would be better for the future

Well if you ever decided to upgrade I just purchase a new mobo and video card today. I bought the dfi expert and evga 7900 gt sig series. The board is great and the card is overclocked 600mhz which is faster than most of the 7800gtx and it cost about 100 bucks less. Iin total I spent about 600 and I think it is money well spent. For about the cost of one 7800gtx I got a faster card and a great mobo for about the same price. Just my opinion.
