wait, you read infinite jest and thought it was 'resolved'? and so you won't read pale king because you deem it 'unresolved'? you either really don't understand david foster wallace, or you're just being a mong.

both pale king and gravity's rainbow took me an entire summer to read. they're not books you can read unattentively, or in snippets.

To expand on that, there is adult fiction that's smooth reading. The Lord of the Rings, great as it is, doesn't fit into the category. Tolkien was mostly building lore with those books.

so are we discussing books here or are you talking to yourself by iterating truisms and common sense statements that everyone else already knows

there is adult fiction that is smooth reading? wait a minute... what? how do you know that? i thought that was a vault of understanding you only get at PhD level.

So should I simply go back to slamming whatever you have to say about any topic, or are we done here?

thanks for contributing to our group understanding/opinion of the hobbit.

adding to my comment that it's a "great book", it is easier to read, yet not as detailed. thank you.

I'm sorry, maybe you have some more cool stories to go contribute to the Minecraft thread. Meanwhile, if you want people to stop calling you a snob, stop acting like one.

how am i being snobbish? if i was being snobbish, i'd laugh at dilbert reading the hobbit, which is a children's book. instead, i think it's a great book and commend reading (and discussing) it. it's not snobbism at all when i say that to quote me and say "the hobbit isn't written in a very detailed manner, but is easy to read". that's just blinking my eyes at a post that doesn't need to exist.

You really read all that into it? I've read both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, and find it difficult to read one without thinking about the difference in style from the other.

This 2 week vacation has finally given me a chance to really start reading the iliad.
i was afraid that it would turn out ad boring due to the language used, but i am pleasantly surprised. Im hoping to finish it this week so i can start the odyssey during this vacation as well (and maybe even finish it)

It depends entirely on the translation but both are interesting reads, especially the Iliad

Im reading the wordsworth classics edition if that helps.
Im going to drop by the english book store (its actually called the 'American book centre' but its just a convenient place for me to buy english books since i get a 20% discount) and pick up one (or maybe even a couple) of book to read after the iliad before i start on the odyssey.
Im going to need a break from the whole classical poetry once im done with this one.

Hopefully you have a companion reader and/or understand all the allegory and imagery. Pretty pointless to read either without that understanding.
