Remember this?

Remember how people lost their minds about how we have to respect the presidency and all that jazz? I disagree.

I don't think our leaders elected or otherwise deserve any respect based of of their office alone. I think the whole idea of a meritocracy doesn't allow for a respect of office like some people want to have for the president. I think "respect" for our officials can only be earned through their actions.

I also don't see how winning an election for an office is somehow an accomplishment warranting awe. It's nothing more than a glorified popularity contest. Considering how an elected position in our government is billed as a "service to the people" instead of a reward or privilege etc. I don't see how the people can be expected to treat their officials with some sort of undue respect since the position demands service...

Am I wrong? Do we have to respect the president, and congress or should we treat them like we would any other person who doesn't perform, is wrong, is a failure etc.?

There's a difference between showing respect to an elected official and acting like a bunch of children on the senate floor. But in your example that was another elected offical making the remarks. Not that childish behaviour in parliament is anything new. It's quite apparently in Aus politics, and even more so in the British parliament.

I'd show more respect to someone with a PhD than an elected official tbh. And it pisses me off when an elected official gets "awarded" one for doing nothing but throwing some $ towards an institution. Honourary doctorates are a joke.

I would respect the position more than the person in that position.

How much should we respect elected officials?
Just as much as we have to (/military, etc) respect the position in addition to how much they deserve it. No more.

The way I see it, a (relative) majority of my fellow citizens felt that person should represent them in that office.  I may not agree with them, but I have to respect that fact. I certainly don't approach political appointees the same way. They are just cogs in the wheel. However, they have institutional power, due to their positions, and must be treated with some deference because of that...but not groveled to.

BL: Treat people with respect. Period.
