That's because Samsung's TouchWiz UI is an absolute eye sore. I can't stand it and HTC's Sense isn't doing Android any favors, either. Hopefully with the newest version the manufacturers will quit dicking around with the UI and actually focus more on the hardware. The software on Android is with 4.0 now the best it's ever been and in my opinion finally a true rival for iOS and Windows Phone 7 (say what you like, but that OS is absolutely amazing).

I never even considered WinPhone7 to be honest, I have the old 6.0 on my current (old) Samsung i780 and it's horrifying, I know the new one is a complete revamp, but their marketshare remains tiny compared to Android and Apple, if they manage to rival just Apple's marketshare I might look into them...

your loss.  is it a shitty cheap one?
how is it his loss if his user preference is for iOS?

arrogant little android geeks seem to think that everyone that uses a phone on a day to day basis wants to have it totally customisable.

the android mentality is like saying "no car is worth driving unless you can rebuild the engine from scratch in your garage". not everyone wants to do that. some people just want something that works and won't give them any annoying break-downs. the iphone 4s has great performance and is a top-rate phone. deal with it you little nerdfucker.
no, its really not at all.  its like saying you want to be able to choose the paint on your car, or choose if you want power windows, automatic vs manual, sat-nav.  im not building the fucking hardware, thats a god awful analogy.

im about as much of an android geek as you are a hardcore apple drone (which i know youre not).  its his loss to not be able to compare phones without having a massive bias based off of his 2 year old android running software 3 or 4 generations old.  the 4s has great performance but is a mediocre upgrade being propped up by a beta software that doesnt work a large fraction of the time, and loses significant use outside of the US.  and exists on many other phones

Market share is only increased by people buying it, bro. Contribute to the increase in market share! I'm holding out on my next phone until I finally get to test Nokia's Lumia 800 for an extended period of time - supposed to get a model from Nokia to have for a few weeks sometime in Q1 2012.

Yeah the N9/Lumia800 looks really sweet, It's just I don't want to be an early adopter, because you run the risk of the platform getting ignored and then you have a smartphone which noone makes apps for, which makes it pretty pointless

I dont think I am "the market" for a lot of smartphone trends but saying a lack of apps makes a smartphone pointless is a bit disingenuous. A list of things made 10x more convenient by a large touch screen and 3g internet is pretty long and doesnt exlude many basic everday functions. The Metro UI is really, really good and just using the phone to do basic things like browse the internet, call/sms etc is a pleasure.

I don't think there is a basic lack of apps. The problem is that for companies that bring out something for the iPhone or Android, you might be left in the cold as a WP7 user. I know how that is considering I was an early adopter of Android. Still got my phone, too (and I want something new!).

err, no.  ive seen countless comments on how it takes multiple attempts to do thing and how it doesnt recognize words.  at the least, it needs a way to learn your voice and accent as well as the ability to teach it words, something that's existed in voice control applications for years.
its a gimmick, a very cool gimmick at that, but still a gimmick.  and the fact that you cant actually search for locations outside of the US is ridiculous.

Voice control makes you look like a muppet in public anyway

and how is voice control a decisive factor in smartphone purchase?

The only places I've heard that declare Siri the killer feature for the iPhone 4S are tech blogs that aren't really about tech, so much as they are about the latest gadget porn (see sites such as Mashable) and aren't very tech about the whole thing. It's fashionable and hip and exclusive to the iPhone 4S, thus it is desirable.

I agree with Uzi: the iPhone 4S is a brilliant device. Siri is a gimmick, that's true. If you want to voice control your phone, it should be possible without even touching it. I'm curious what the next generation of the iPhone is going to bring considering this was more an update (despite the new processor), so I'm sure Apple will have something up their sleeves next season. Come 2013 I think we'll see the last devices that Jobs had a direkt influence on and it will be extremely interesting to see what they bring out that year and after.

i didnt say it was an awful phone.  its a great phone, its just not the best thats out there, a sentiment expressed by quite a few big tech sites, engadget for example.  and with the first round of ICS phones coming out within the next few months...
