I had friends in high school/college that followed dragon ball. Fucking nerds. They would buy the Japanese version with subtitles when it came out do they could be 6 months ahead and pretend like they were dapper dons when they were really weabo nerds
i only ever watched it when it got bought-out by our cartoon network here in the uk and would be put on (double-bill!) in the mornings before school. pretty cool long-narrative to keep up with. though it was just repetitious bullshit, really. half of every episode was comic-book flickshots between two guy's faces with them shouting UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHNNNNNNNN or AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH or OOOOOOOOOOOOH or OHFUCKYESOHFUCKYESOHFUCKYESIMCOMINGYESYESOHGODDDDDDDDDDDDD so that they could shoot some huge load at the other guy and then collapse and light a cigarette as the credits rolled. it was pretty bogus.

i tried to step up my game when i was like 13/14 and get into gundam wing, because naturally by that point i was reading hegel (or the oxford companion edition, written by dr. jay schubert, phd) and deleuze and shit and thought i should really start making my cartoons high-brow. gundam wing just lost me to its own convoluted plot after like 3 episodes. i gave up. those things have casts like war & peace, too. and none of them ever show any titties or get raped by octupus (octopii? is that a valid genre? multiple tentacled animals using multiple tentacles on singular orifices? email me ur reply asap)

One of my buddies still buys gundam wing and shit like that. He used to have the mech toys that he would play with. At like 16 years old. Now he's making scrilla in the concept art/design world. Serious cash that he blows on hookers, guns and anime.

I hate how long it all sticks in your head for. I haven't seen Gundam Wing since I was 13 but still can explain the plot, name the mobile suits, and pilots of both the show and the movie. I am 21, I should have forgotten that by now.

i'm pretty happy that i missed the anime wave that came through just as i was leaving high school. Akira was the big thing among the hipster-nerds back then

Akira is legit art from a film perspective. You picked the wrong series to talk shit on

I showed my sister and her boyfriend, both 15 and into anime, Akira a few days ago.

They thought deathnote was better and didn't get Akira. Fucking kids these days.

tbh my 90's were more characterised by things like dexter's lab and good old blighty english things like thomas the tank engine. anime was like the new punky rebellious kid on the block when i was just getting too old for cartoons. it started to infiltrate uk cartoon networks very slowly, eventually getting its own dedicated channel. but fuck knows what else was on there except for dragonball and gundam. oh and digimon. sailor moon maybe?  some shit like that. avoid.

my friend used to buy pirate japanese anime dvd's and they were fucking badass. the feature-lengths, that is. they had like serious dialogue, and complexity, and depth, and dark themes, and serious gore, and tentacle rape. all of which were high on a 14 year old schoolkids lunch menu.

they also had really pretentious titles so i can't recall any of them.

one sounded spanish. esta... flone? esta florey? uuuuuuum.

i had a captain scarlet doll action-figure thing and it was literally terrifying.

my childhood was also marked as much by this obsessive desire to keep on watching a vhs of 'last of the mohicans'. i watched that film literally as many times as i watched morning cartoons before school. pretty funny. i dug that shit when i was like 12. i really don't know why.
