i don't agree with the protestors. my qualm is with police handling. who cares if the protestors are doing wrong? that's an opportunity to enforce the law professionally and to put things right. instead you have a messy shitfuck of a scenario where the police react to protestors being dicks by being bigger dicks themselves. great. soooo productive.
How do you arrest a person that is resisting without it looking like police brutality?

please show me where the people on those videos are resisting. the guy holding the flag did not resist arrest at all. he didn't even shout or speak a word. total silence. he was still rough-handled and some onlookers still got swiped at. please watch the videos in question or at least present videos of your own so we have reference. i know they're far from the best 'evidence' but at least we can ground the discussion in something other than hypotheticals.

it is violence when its the police using it. "to protect and to serve" the citizens, right? not to go around sucker-punching them and throwing them on the ground because they offended some cop's ego. that ain't what it's about. i'm pretty sure that guy is protected by the freedom of speech to say "is this what you're about?" and question the police's actions. it shouldn't equal a forceful arrest. not even gonna talk about the guy getting full-on swung for in the background whilst they're making the arrest. why? what for? how is that proper conduct from your own law enforcers?

also, videos like this... how do you defend it? watch it til the end.

if that's "standard" then you guys have fucking issues.
There was an EMT that got his leg broken trying to help someone out. Cops used flashbang to clear the crowd then assist people, but in this case there were waaaaaaaay too many people to go help that kid. Man I hate this "zomgs i iz veteran at protest" shit. like the black marine in OWS bitching about the wars saying hes "been there" lol he worked at motor T and never deployed.

on the same stroke cybargs i could say i hate your "zomgs i iz a cultural and political conservative" when you're like 19 years old and still in college. why are you acting like a 40 year old grumbling republican? it seems many people on both sides of this debate have questionable authenticity. personally i don't understand why you're pissing and moaning about protestors when a) you've never had a job or a big enough financial stake in society to be bothered by 'anti-capitalist' sentiment and b) the things these people protest about only serve to benefit you.

aren't half the protestors getting roughed up by police protesting against tuition fee increases and student debts? i know in the uk the mass protest movement was in direct reaction to tuition fee restructuring. they're against the capitalist society that stacks the young generation with huge debts, sharkish loans/finance set-ups, and provides them with less prospects to do even as well as their parents did, opportunity-wise, a whole generation ago. that's what i've gathered, anyway. how exactly does that harm you? why are you acting like some pissy texan oil baron? why are you grumbling like a 40-something lowing blue-collar boy? you're looking down on people that you have no credibility to look down upon.

raising taxes would pretty much affect my situation, so no they dont serve my interests. and my tuition fees are fine thnx. if you end up with 100k with debt before the age of 21, youre pretty fucking retarded to keep attending the same school.

you're pretty retarded if you can't see the argument or rationale behind getting saddled with 100k debt. if you're capable of going to these good schools and you can't afford to pay the money up front, you need to get a loan. if you don't take that stretch, some other rich kid with wealthy parents will take your spot, and you'll be a janitor for the rest of your life. you have to get into big debts to become qualified enough to access any decent-level graduate work nowadays. that's the way the graduate job market works. save money and get a cheaper community college degree and you're less employable.

again my point is i don't see why you're adopting such a smarmy attitude. these people may be foolish for being idealists, naive, maybe just plain hippies and eco-warriors and the same sort of left-leaning radical that is kinda ridiculous in this day and age. but you have no interests, financial or political, that should put you in such direct opposition to them. indifference, maybe. hatred... why?

They're private schools and lots of them are pretty shitty. What's wrong with the state schools they can go to? they're not any worst if not better than most private schools. Shit I could do the same in Australia and pay 50k a year in a shitty school, or i could do what im doing and pay only 7k a year with a better education. If it's really that expensive you might as well work for a few years first then go to uni. I do have financial interests that are direct opposite to them, mo taxes less money fo me. then again theyre in america and the one in sydney and melbourne failed baaaaaaaaaaaaad.

It's not about the situation you're in now, but the situation you plan on being in down the road. If you have hopes of being wealthy someday you'd be an idiot to advocate higher taxes. So, to turn that around on you, why would a 20 something with their whole life ahead of them throw in the towel and scream for Marxism? Something is missing internally. They have no hope, or they have no drive, or they have no talent. Who gives up so early in life?

yeah....

Or it could be that they're students now, and can empathize with the students of the future, realizing that higher tuition and causing students to go into debt is a bad thing.

And even if we look at it in a completely realist way (which seems to be your approach), it's retarded to make calculations based on the potential for you to reach an advantageous position.
Most of the higher tuition (in the US) is largely caused by private institutions abusing the fact that students can get cheap loans from FASFA, not public ones. I mean if they're really that expensive, you should look at other options.

Zique, with the Ivy's in the US they usually hand out scholarship like candy and most people can qualify for financial aid.

perhaps they're marxists now because all they have had to go on throughout their own life's experience is a systematic failure and downward spiral in global capitalism. now especially with global issues being widely acknowledged such as population growth and climate change, capitalism seems like a desperately flawed ideology with which to cope. it's far too short-sighted and self-interested. it's no wonder that academically aware students in liberal lefty colleges are seeing the benefits of 'another way'. isn't that what universities have always been about in america, to a degree? your mainstream culture is much more conservative than many other democracies, so it's pretty much up to the students and the college campuses to keep revolutionary, progressive politics alive (which has pretty much been a barely glowing ember since the 60's).

If that is really what you think OWS is about then you are either being obtuse or have not payed much attention. Anyone who is behind this movement is not the type to have their life aimed at "being wealthy someday" (what a shit aspiration btw). The movement is about a fairer system that doesn't saddle the majority with debt and give the minority excessive wealth. Associating things like "no talent, no drive" with this movement is extremely inaccurate as well - I am not going to go looking for examples but there are plenty of good ones, people who have 100k+ debts after law/med school and can't find jobs.

You don't have to support OWS to properly understand what they are protesting about - it has nothing to do with being lazy, being on welfare, doing womens studies degrees. These are all talking points established by right-wing commentators (ie. the ones who are politically against the movement) to diminish OWS and "other" them. I am not trying to make anyone change sides or support OWS I just can't stand all the completely inaccurate assertions being made in this thread.

most poor blacks don't have the privilege of an education to find a voice. i don't have a problem with middle-class intelligent white people speaking up for the disenfranchised - as long as its not patronising or exploitative. how are the truly poor and impoverished meant to find a voice? or have the education to even articulate themselves? most oppressed groups can only express themselves in pure rage, or anti-social or illegal behaviour. and the establishment's reaction to those 'signs' is normally to merely stigmatise and further marginalize the groups with some convenient rationale, e.g. "young black males are just more prone to crime, it's part of their gangster culture". lazy.

Is that all you have to say about that entire post? The fact you can even manage to have a debt that large for just educating yourself is absurd anyway. Tertiary education used to be free in Australia and it is still very inexpensive - it is one of the few good things our government has managed.

The US has state schools where most people can go with cheapo tuition. Most expensive is probably the UCs and theyre 20k a year. + you can get grants and financial aid from schools. Besides most aussie schools are supported by international students anyway

university education here has gone from free to near-$100k average in one generation, too. what have kids born today done that means they should pay so much more than their parents, who probably got through university for free? something is fundamentally wrong with that. education used to be seen as a benefit to society as a whole, and to the workforce. now it's another commodity.
