decided to take my sleep schedule by the horns and stayed up all night so I can reset my internal clock. I've fucking had it with finding myself awake and full of energy at 3AM. all I need to do is make it to morning (when the sun is fully up) and I'll be good.

I find that if I stay up all night and then go to bed the next night at a reasonable hour, it resets my internal clock. So for instance, I've been going to bed at 3 and waking up at 10. Now I'm gonna go to bed at 12 and wake up at 8ish. And then my body will be set to go to bed and wake up around those same times.

i'm still pretty sure he goes to UNH anyways
UNH has a pretty campus and a delightful female:male ratio. I wanted to go there when I was in high school

I got an A- on a paper because it was 'too academic'

He wanted something we could publish in The Economist, not an academic journal.

Yeah, he pretty much said being able to write for a journal will only get you anywhere if you plan on staying in academia, so he's forcing us to write simplified pieces for their real world applications. Totally not what I'm used to; I can't express complex political issues with not theory to back me up and still come across as knowledgeable. He showed me the best paper in the class (85%), and it read like a fucking low-grade newspaper article. When I told him I thought it was shit, he said 'that's what the world wants'.

It's kinda true though. Joe Sixpack doesn't want to trudge through some dense, boring academic writing.

He's a former journalist, so I think even he finds reading the academic papers a bore. He told me as soon as he read my intro he knew it was too dense to be enjoyable. For the next paper it's entirely my style, though, so I should do much better.

I always liked being able to write in my own style. I think there's nothing worse for writing than forcing someone to stay within very specific parameters.

Guess canadian grading is like aussie lol, 85 here is a high distinction and anything past a 75 is a distinction...

interesting that your teacher is le douche with that, at my uni theyre really anal about using academic sources for business papers (mostly Harvard business review...). I had to write "Memo to the boss" for Intl bznz with topics like "we are a euro luxury car maker and looking for production in indonesia coz its cheap, good idea?" most boring shit i've ever written but then again it was really easy.

Joe Sixpack doesn't buy The Economist.

The dumbing down could be why most people consider members of the media to be blithering idiots. Talk to the middle, not the bottom, if you feel the need to talk down at all

I like The Economist because it's still pretty easy and interesting to read. One of the biggest reasons I hated doing research papers in HS was that I had to go through boring scholarly journal articles.

such a great idea though - recorded seminars for youtube. free education!

the modern american novel, i think. which sounds like a pretty wanky course. but it also covered a book i'm doing for a study of the postmodernist form - everything is illuminated. it wasn't a bad class, it was just disappointingly average, when i was expecting some serious original thought or insight from a yale don. instead i got some woman cracking jokes to a half-empty class full of students that didn't seem to know anything (or at least hadn't done the reading that week).

Did you watch both lectures on Foer? As you noted, I don't study English, and the only English department class I've taken was a introductory freshman writing seminar that I needed to eliminate a distribution requirement. All courses meant for students of the major are ENGL 200+, as this one was, so you should have seen a decent cross section of Yale English majors. Our English department is supposed to be one of the strongest departments for undergrad and graduate study, and it doesn't have the reputation of attracting less academically qualified athletes or legacies like history, economics, or political science. However, I don't think many students here really exert themselves intellectually during lecture (and sometimes neither do professors) so let me read the transcripts and see if they are trying and failing or simply not trying at all.

i watched both parts, yes. i'm sure it is considered a 'strong' department, but then again any department with that much money and muscle behind it is going to be strong. as i said i'm not being hyper-critical here, i was just expecting genius mode to be 'engaged', and it wasn't. often times the biggest and best are guilty of resting on their laurels. it's the same everywhere. i only wish more universities offered it.
