Right. They were doing nothing to instigate a fight. They were doing nothing out of the ordinary, just sitting where they always sit. Please.
Yeah, as Feos said

Except those people actually had valid reasons to protest. The people protesting today do not. They just 'want to be a part of something' even though their 'something' is nothing.

Pepper spray sucks. You feel like you want to die for a good five minutes. Searing pain, snot hanging in ribbons to the ground. But guess what? It only lasts the five minutes.

The fact that our political system is deadlocked and that the average voter has little to no say in their government is reason enough to protest. If you buy into their arguments about wealth in this country (their facts are correct but the devil is in the details) then they do have reason to complain that their quality of life is going to be lower than their parents and that the government doesn't much care.

As much of a good time you are having taking shots at the OWS movement, John, I think it's funny how you will defend the Tea Party to death. Because those guys were 'fighting the good fight' while these people 'just want to be a part of something'. Can you be more hypocritical?

Tea Party put candidates into office who changed the national debate regarding government spending.

OWS has people shitting in public parks.

The two are completely comparable.

The average voter has a say in their government every time there is an election...generally every November, at some level (local, state, or national). Did they leave their encampments to go vote a couple of weeks ago? I bet not.

Spain, Ireland, and Portugal too. I know Europe's economic conditions well.

I know we are pretty well off compared to our equals (Euro economies) and much better well off compared to our not so equal (your "starving kids in Africa"). I don't think we crashing and burning and I don't buy into the chicken little arguments hence the "devil in the details" part of my post. I don't buy into the "Rome is burning" view either. I think the U.S. economy will manage to pull itself out and we will be fine in the long run. I'm extremely optimistic about that.

I just do not buy into the whole "stupid kids want to be a part of something" mantra. They do have some genuine grievances about how the government treats them. Think Dick Cheney's "So?!" when asked about what he thinks about most Americans opposing Iraq or think about how the Democrats pushed health care reform down the countries collective throats. The fact that in Washington doesn't give two shits about the people it rules over is a problem. It's something to be upset about.

It's really dumb, I'm talking about you right now John, to say that people don't have a reason to be upset about the conditions which they live under just because it doesn't jive with your narrow world view.

Do you understand where I am coming from, marine?

The Tea Party was hijacked by Washington methinks. If you follow the money trial, it was hardly a new grassroots thing.

As far as the shitting in parks, I could take bit from the Tea party to make the whole thing like really bad. It's a dumb game to play.

The conversation was between Marine and me. Hence why I used the softer tone... The whole post and the "Do you understand where I am coming from?" was directed at marine.

I only refereed to John in that one spot because I knew he would read it and I wanted to underscore my contempt.

I think you're missing the point that you've missed John's point.

The TP did something with their angst. Has actually accomplished something.

OWS has accomplished exactly nothing, even though they have just as much passion about a lot of the same issues. Maybe different views on how those issues should be resolved, but still just as much passion. But they seem to think that sitting in parks and holding signs and making nuisances of themselves will somehow magic the change they seek into existence.

See the link I posted earlier in the thread.

Can't stand the Tea Party, but I'm inclined to agree. If so many people support the Occupy movement... why don't THEY create a party of their own? Wow, what an ingenious idea. But of course not. Because their plan from here on out is to occupy a public park that, to my recollection, is not even within eyesight of the NYSE.

And the consistent defenders get pissed because people say they have no plan. Until they actually use the system that's in place to get change or at least attempt it, which as evidenced by the Tea Party is entirely possible, the "movement" is still as pointless as it ever was.
