all of a sudden it makes so much sense

play games ultra competitively -> grow out of teenage phase -> go pro at partying and taking drugs

the seemingly unrelated events of my life are all just linked to the fact i've got a superhuman gamer brain

Who would've thought that addiction was transferrable!?!?!?!

i think it's a much more interesting article than to just state 'addiction is transferrable'. it's not about addiction, it's about everyday activities that we do that subtly change the actual physiology of our brain. activities far more innocuous and casual than shooting up heroin, or any other extreme behaviour that changes your brain's behaviour fundamentally. i'm interested in the way that gaming, as a major new form of cultural entertainment, will affect us neurologically and socially over the years. it's still incredibly new. we've seen what television has done to culture, diluting everything and turning us into a sugar-rush generation wanting easy, passive entertainment - what david foster wallace called an "orgy of spectation". but what do games mean? if games, as the research suggests, constantly engages and stimulates the reward pathways of the brain, then this could mean many things. it's not about one person's addiction transferring into other addictive, compulsive tendencies. it's about the fact that gaming, as well as its putative benefits to your brain (e.g. reflexes, spatial awareness) could also be slowly grooming your lower reward systems into something that is far more prone to future addictive behaviour. just like they say that according to heredity someone could fall for alcohol as quickly as that, perhaps a childhood of playing games frequently (which certainly isn't an extreme behaviour anymore in the modern world) could prepare an adult for all sorts of compulsive or addictive behaviour elsewhere. that's eye-opening. no other form of mass entertainment has changed our mental physiology in quite such a drastic way, if the research has any truth to it.

also, americans: why is it that for like a year you were giving obama shit over the sound of his 'name' and what that means... yet now one of your candidates is called Cain? i thought you fuckers read the bible? this is not a good omen. bring back hussein.
