I used to get rid of the books I have read but now I have this urge to display them. It also seems like a normal person thing to do and I want to seem normal, like I am. So, what are some rules to filling up a bookshelf?

I already know hardcover > softcover. What else is there?

Organize however you want. Everyone has their own personal preferences and pet peeves. I don't add to my bookshelf until I've actually read the book. I try to organize my bookcases every few months or so, but for the most part my books are just stacked haphazardly on the shelf until I get around to organizing them.

Do whatever you want. Once you get a girlfriend she'll rearrange it however she wants it anyway

i read way too much to organize a bookshelf in any fashion. i actually quite like having a bit of hodgepodge variety. one of my friends bought pretty much every single book he was required to read for a 3-year undergraduate degree in Classics in the black-spine penguin classic variety, then proudly arranged them on his shelf as this impressive three-tier uniform collection. i thought it looked shite. at the end of the day - who cares? if you want to impress somebody, you need to have a room-sized library fulla books, not some well-ordered shelf of curiosities.

Either alphabetically or biggest to smallest (left to right) is how I do it.

My buddies wife arranges their DVD's by case color.  Kind of odd but whatever.

I kind of like the hodgepodge too. It's more....personal (for lack of a better word) than a well-organized, sterile looking shelf of neatly arranged titles, sorted by genre/author/spine color

i tend to think that a bookshelf is well-ordered when and because nobody ever reads from it. i'm constantly reading about 3-4 books and am referring back to or picking up others for 5 minute flickthroughs, or a quick reminder, or to answer a question i may have. it's impossible to maintain 100's of books neatly if you're constantly picking them up and putting them down like that. hell, two days ago i lost a novel that i was 200 pages into and needed to finish. misplaced it and couldn't find it for like 2 days. was down the side of my bed. fuck neat bookshelves.

i used to follow a tumblr that just collected together pictures of people's bookshelves and libraries - it was pretty interesting. you had loads of weird designs like that one ^ above. i think a library, or at least a room with bookshelves and a reading chair, are some of the most characteristic parts of anyone's home.

I really like this set up.  It means it can look interesting and somewhat organized without really putting any effort into it.
