this is the thing that makes you sound like androoz - you read about a few exemplary individuals that went it alone and managed to become huge successes because of their special talent and 'right time, right place' intuition. you hear about people like steve jobs, or thinkers like sagan in androoz's case ('if he can smoke weed and be smart, so can i!') and think that anything is possible. what you don't hear about whilst doing your 'research' on the internet is the 99% of people that failed miserably. don't something like 75% of all business start-ups fail within the first 5 years? that's a lot of broke-ass misery for every shining-star genius that comes along. having a college degree makes a lot of sense, because it's something that equips you with a decent level of qualification for your entire life. but if you want to wing it based on self-confidence alone... good luck.

dilbert my point is that they're pretty easy, cushty, white-collar middle-class jobs that pay an exorbitant amount of money in a lifetime's career for not a lot of sweat and graft. it's the dream graduate lifestyle: high-paying job in the city mile, a flat in a trendy part of town, nice clothes, lots of expendable income, and those nightmarish loans paid off in 3-5 years. how could anyone - especially in this current graduate employment market - not envy a job like that? and they're english literature grads. i'll be pretty satisfied with my lot if i can do that, too. so basically your snide repetitive comments are pointless. you also fail to factor in the account that you had to be a science undergrad for 3/4 years, the university social equivalent of the guy sat on the side of the school disco with his inhaler.

it's the same over here in business and major organisations. experience and real pragmatic work know-how is great for your 20's and for sailing through the lower positions. but then when you start to see job advertisements or vacancies for middle/senior management, or a position of some authority, they start talking about master's degrees and mba's... education pays off then, 10-15 years after you've got the certificate.

and yeah, jay, your figures are kinda depressing. living in london is expensive as shit, hectic as shit, and competitive as shit. but once you get on the ladder it is definitely a gravytrain. and the rest of the country is much cheaper to live in on a day-to-day basis than london, so you can typically do a 10-15 year stretch in a heart-attack inducing job and then just chill the fuck out.
To be fair, Chicago businesses need to pay more to draw people to work there. Most Americans want to live on one of the coasts, not in the Midwest. It's also why the cost of living is so cheap.

yeah what used to be called the american dream is no longer hip and cool, right? i'm not sure you can blame someone for wanting the most comfortable set-up possible. we're creatures of the least possible resistance. i think there's a big difference between wanting a nice middle-class lifestyle and being a big-corporation avaricious capitalist. someone that ends up making a six-figure salary in middle-age is hardly sucking up the 1% of the world's power.

also half the whiny faggots in the OWS system complain about their immense student debts. so they'd spurn someone that tried to get themselves a nice job that could pay off those debts and free themselves of 'the man'? OWS is some retarded shit. i'd suppose they'd prefer someone tried to pay off their debts by selling granola bars and giving transcendental meditation lessons... for free... or something.

The American Dream was never about partying through college and then landing a cushy job with a high salary. That's pretty much the antithesis of the American Dream. It's always been about working your ass off, starting off at the bottom so you can learn the nuts and bolts of your profession, and then reap the rewards of your hard work by the time you get to middle age. Just like the idiots in the Girl Problems thread trying to skip through the progression of hugging, hand holding, kissing, whatever and trying to jump straight into the sack, people like you feel entitled to a middle management position right off the bat just because you hold a piece of paper in your hands. At least you're somewhat smarter than them and understand you can't, in fact, start in the middle and instantly have access to all the luxuries you see on the television.

You spit on science nerds for wasting their time in college, but I worked my ass off and now I'm enjoying a salary twice what you are praying for, and guess what? My job is easy.

No, she makes her own money, thanks. All I was saying is that with our earnings combined we will be in the 1%. We've been dating for six years, and living together for 3. All the marriage would do is combine our income taxes.

what's the criterion for the world's richest 1%? and what will your combined earnings be? in the millions? tens of millions? because the world's richest 1% are a little richer than two middle-class professionals. cute vision, though. aren't the married middle-classes the ones historically getting the most squeezed? hardly sounds like you'll be living the life of globe-trotting, yachting capitalism.

According to the statistics, it's a family income of $250k or so. No, I'm in not in any way comparing myself to Warren Buffett or Koch or Soros or anything like that. It's just a little chest beating on my part to wake you up to reality. She was an English major too, but works in marketing. Her job is hard, and it stresses her the fuck out on a daily basis. Most of the OWS protestors seem to want her paycheck without putting in the effort or deal with the stress. Sailing through life unencumbered by stress or effort while maintaining a posh lifestyle in a major city is not a realistic goal, sorry. You can't have it all.

$250k a year combined household income? that's a pathetic amount of money. when you say "the 1%" in the context of the OWS demonstrations, you're clearly misusing the term to 'chest beat' and big yourself up more than is due. the OWS protestors are not bitching about a middle-class family in the suburbs that make a quarter million a year and drive a chevy. they're complaining about those on wall street that take that much as a modest annual bonus, plus their regular six/seven figure earnings. jesus. by that standard if i marry my current girlfriend i'll be joining the world's 0.1%!

so you hate the middle-class for their comforts but all that you aspire to, essentially, in the 'immigrant's american dream' is the retainment and succession of property. this is what tocqueville criticised as the worst part of the american capitalist democracy. the middle-class comfort. basically you're not there yet but in 2-3 generation's time you'd love to have some grandkids growing up with all the luxuries of middle-class wealth (inherited, of course) because of your hard graft. what a paradoxical person.

I don't hate the middle class at all. I hate people who want everything but don't want to pay for it. The biggest goal of the OWS protestors is to have their student loans forgiven. A secondary goal is to have all debt forgiven. No one put a gun to their head and told them to go to a $50k a year school when their life goal was to work at a Non-Profit where the average pay is barely enough to survive in Brooklyn. They want their Starbucks, and their Apple gear, and their trendy clothes, and all the other mini luxuries of life while bitching the whole time about the price tag associated with it. Nevermind that they have the power to find more lucrative work.

Its not anger or jealousy unique, it's that I despise the people who want jobs that only the children of the idle rich previously occupied because they had no worries about money. When that somehow became a career that undergrads aspired to, we ended up in this situation where they lock themselves in a park and cry about their situation. Fucking morons.

Scratch that $9 million in assets. The low ball figure is 350K according to the CBO. Economist at NYU put the cutoff at 700K.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/29/us/po … rcent.html
The possible exceptions are Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Representative Ron Paul of Texas, whose annual household earnings may not exceed the estimated cutoff of $700,000 for the top 1 percent, and Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, who has yet to file a financial disclosure.
...
Membership in the 1 percent can be measured by wealth or by income. By household wealth, the cutoff point would be a projected $9 million in 2010, according to an analysis of the Federal Reserve Board’s Survey of Consumer Finances by Edward Wolff, an economist at New York University. The cutoff for annual household income would be about $700,000, Mr. Wolff said. (Using Internal Revenue Service figures, which count earnings differently, the Congressional Budget Office puts the earnings cutoff at $350,000 for the 1 percent in 2007.
