I think the spending culture is due to the reproducibility of everything. In the future when the living standard of the average Asian person becomes on par with the US and Europe, then I can see goods being built to last again, because they will be done so by robots. Once the cheap labor force is gone this scenario will unfold or we will have to find cheap labor elsewhere.
Cheaper labour isn't a good analysis of whether a company would offshore productions. German Automakers still produce in the EU because of human capital, the EU political union and most importantly customers perception of products if manufacturing went offshore.

By now, I’m sure most of you have heard about Occupy Wall Street. Inspired by Adbuster’s call for action in July, protesters have occupied Zuccotti Park near Wall Street in New York City since September 17th. I’ve covered the story since the beginning, and am in full support of its stated goals. But I want to talk for a minute here about my hopes for the future of the protest, and in particular the importance of its continued radical inclusivity.

Occupy Wall Street’s General Assembly operates under a revolutionary “progressive stack.” A normal “stack” means those who wish to speak get in line. A progressive stack encourages women and traditionally marginalized groups speak before men, especially white men. This is something that has been in place since the beginning, it is necessary, and it is important.

“Step up, step back” was a common phrase of the first week, encouraging white men to acknowledge the privilege they have lived in their entire lives and to step back from continually speaking. This progressive stack has been inspiring and mind-boggling in its effectiveness.

Yeah, I feel totally privileged to be a white male... Such a heavy burden I carry around with me. If this is the future, god help us all...

Hi, here in Denmark we have free college/university education, they even pay You like 1000$ each month to study. We also have free healthcare. Taxes are probably higher aka 40%. minimum wage: 18$. I anyone want a free university degree with pocketchange come to Denmark XD (I mean it). I think the same is the case in other european countries. There is foreign student on all danish uni's.

No your university education is not free. Your monthly stipend is not free. Your healthcare is not free. You have 43% tax rates. You are taking money out of other peoples pocket when you use those services. Your economy is propped up by Maersk and your education comes out of their pocket. You should get down on your knees and worship every Maersk executive that you meet because without them you have jack shit.

oh jay it's cute when your cynicism disallows any other country its success. denmark enjoys one of the best qualities of life in the world. doesn't seem like they're doing too bad to me. my gf and her family are danish and their lifestyle/culture seem extremely happy, fulfilled, content, social, wealthy (spiritually and materially). i don't really see what there is to piss and moan about. 43% taxes? seems to be going towards a good end. if everyone's happy, where's the problem? i think you're being a little disingenuous to say that all of denmark is propped up by maersk. you can apply that type of skepticism towards any advanced market democracy.

I really wish the words 'progressive and liberal' were retired from U.S. politics. I cringe every time I hear a radio host rail against 'Liberals and progressives'. Not because of their views but because of how they managed to twist the meaning of both of those words for most Americans.

This from the country which depends on communist China for working capital and manufactured goods, and Islamic theocracies for fuel.

When your low taxes and 'free-market' solve those problems please get back to us.

Right, but Maersk pays like 150$ per dane a year in tax. Then they have the right to all the danish oil. Fair deal?
I was trying to point out that people in US get very very little for their tax money I think. Your system is designed for corporations, not people.

Yep, national security  is actually just a "make work" program.  They might as well just dig holes and fill them in all day.  No one benefits.  /sarcasm
