Registration?
You amuse me.
The point is there should be 14 million guns minimum lying around. Plus all those military outposts they past and they didn't stop to grab a beretta?

I don't really understand why they didn't search that outpost around the CDC after it popped but I suppose panic had a lot to do with it.

This is the one time they may have had a chance. You could write it off as panic, that the explosion would draw zombies quick, or simply that common sense says the soilders would have used up most, if not all of the ammo while they were being over run. Scavenging would have taken time they didnt have and not much point in grabbing a bunch of rifles that you dont have ammo for and are unlikely to find any for.

Hmm... good point. I still don't understand how you can get overrun while sitting in an Abrams tank, though. You have the machine guns, the main turret and tank treads. Surely you can do some damage with that.

Even locking yourself in a HMMWV. Those things have very tough glass and they could easily plow down walkers.

Most soldiers don't carry handguns so I guess no point in looking. I'd never want to grab a rifle though. They're way too loud. heavy to lug around, and you only want to shoot walkers at close range that you've startled because at further ranges you can just sneak by.

The treads part is a good point. But I guess thats a bit away from the main story line so they didnt bother with it. I would think they would have been able to set up better defenses than sand bags around the CDC, one of the military guys here would probably know, unless it was ground zero (I figure thats what the doctor whispered to him on the way out, and would explain the suicides a bit better.).

This is the problem I have with zombie apocalypse movies, though: at the end of the day, the militaries of the word, with all their expensive hardware, can't repulse what is essentially a crowd of slow moving junkies with a biting problem?

You do realize pistols are louder than rifles most of the time right?

Still the best genre of movie though.

I'm not saying they're not entertaining!

The secretary at my office nearly had an orgasm at the lunch table in the cafeteria when I told her there was a TV series about this, though, and that I could give her all the episodes (for some reason it hasn't been dubbed over into German and aired here in Austria... yet).

I see a problem with that tank, that 1500HP Turbo diesel it runs off of. Out of gas? Then what?

Could be a problem if they are already infected from within.

The real problem with the whole genre is that the zombies would just rot and be unable to move after a few weeks.

The fresh dead, yes.  But the George Romero Night embalmed varieties, as well as the chemically preserved Returned varieties, would last quite a long time.  And who's to say if the virus/man-made varieties aren't "living" flesh, occassionally renewed when feeding.

What is that supposed to mean?

here's an interesting post from a Walking Dead forum.

First off, the military does NOT have unlimited ammo, and most of the ammo they have is NOT stored in bases in the US. Furthermore, no army in the world trains it's standard infantry troops to make head shots, they shoot for 'center mass' - the torso. Also, a large portion of our military is deployed in other countries, so operations on our home soil would be handled mainly by the National Guard. This is a problem because a) guardsmen train less than regular soldiers and b) it would be difficult for a part-time soldier/guardsman to leave his family and report for duty. In hurricane Katrina, less than 40% of the New Orleans police force showed up for work - they wanted to stay with their families and make sure THEY were safe.

It is also very difficult to imagine US soldiers being given orders to kill infected civilians right off the bat, even if they are going to become zombies eventually. It is even harder to imagine them FOLLOWING such orders.

Finally, there are about 300,000 soldiers in the US military. There are 300 MILLION civilians in the country. Not only does the army not have 300 million bullets, let alone enough bullets to ensure 300 million headshots, but very few people, soldiers or civilian, would be able to singlehandedly kill 1,000 zombies, which is what each soldier would have to do. Gunshots also bring more zombies to your position, in greater numbers than you can handle.

You can fire a machine gun into a herd of zombies all day long and not kill more than a few of them - remember, headshots are all that matter. Even if you blow off a zombie's arms or legs, it will still use whatever limbs it has left to attack you.

THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY:
Would you rather be...
1) A single solitary soldier with an assault rifle, being attacked by 1,000 people armed with bare hands, sticks, and rocks, OR
2) One of 1,000 people in a crowd attacking one soldier with an assault rifle?

Granted, each bullet is more likely to kill it's target than each rock, but the fact is that most of the 1,000 will survive while the one soldier will certainly die.

a good reply to the above quote posted

It is inconceivable that a zombie horde, regardless of size would overrun any organized military. these are dumb eating machines. they do not posses the intelligence to make logical decisions. Basically, all you would need to do is use loud speakers to corral these geeks into confined spaces (between two buildings with one end blocked off by barriers. Once the come into the enclosed area, you would just pick them off one by one, or just blow them up. don't forget. zombies rot. after 6 months there would not even be able to move. not only that, but they are vulnerable to attack by wild animals (mammals, insects, birds).
I like the idea of rounding them up with loudspeakers and killing them.
