I have to add that I believe a degree's worth/usefulness depends heavily on what you put in it. A: have a plan, B: work hard. If you finish top of the class and know exactly what you want to and can do with your degree, that's what matters.

The lady with the degree in ME studies probably never really thought about what she was going to do after she got her degree. Had she done a minor in one of the arabic dialects she could've been working at an embassy. It's a problem with 90% of the students getting humanities/arts degrees, they don't plan ahead.

Embassy jobs are not as easy to get as most people think. You can either go through policy analysis (which is probably what the woman wants) or administration. Shocking I completely agree, which is why people should double major, do something you're interested in and something practical. Tying ME studies with an econ/business major will help you get jobs. But usually companies don't really need "cultural" experts when hiring overseas, lots of shit is done through trial and error or find an expat whos actually lived there. I fucking love IR and its my major, but am I putting out all my chips in it? Fuck no, only job prospects are government or NGOs and hiring is VERY VERY fucking strict. That's why I'm doing Intl Business as my second major.

Macbeth is just jelly coz he know's he's shit out of luck with his poli sci degree lol. Enjoy researching voting demographics.

If you want a career in Middle Eastern Studies;

Get your language skills and 2-year degree in language/foreign culture studies here
Spend a couple years in the middle east, to finish out your 4 year enlistment
Use the GI bill to go to a decent 4 year college
Graduate college with no student loan debt

Put on resume;
4 years US Army, fluent in x foreign language, degree from DLIFLC, top secret/SCI clearance, bachelors (or masters) in x degree, actual experience in a foreign culture.

That is how to get a job with a NGO, oil company,  or in a diplomatic office.
Though you may want to go with a B.Sci. in Petroleum engineering. Pay is better, more jobs available.

dod clearences are only worthwile if youre looking for a dod job.  other agencies wouldnt even consider military clearences other than the fact they know youre familiar with the process.

Shocking, Roc, Cybarg, Hurricane are any of you independent of your parents yet? It's telling, me thinks, that the smartest comments ITT came from Ty and Kmar, both independent adults while you guys sling shit without as much as having a BA to hang on the wall.

Not defending the protest or anything but damn guys glass houses.
are you yourself independent? one doesn't need to be a statesman to comment on politics, I don't think one needs to own a house and the whole nine yards to comment on someone getting a pretty impractical degree.

Good indicator that you can get their clearance, and are familiar with the routine handling of sensitive materials.

And, which would you hire? between the above resume and
"M.A in Middle Eastern Studies, minor in Arabic, UC Berkeley. 4 years as a barista in Starbucks. 3 arrests during protests (Code Pink, Save the Birkenstocks, and Occupy WalMart), 2 arrests for marijuana possession"

So, what your saying is, if you live in a first world country, you should try to change your government for the better, because its better than a third world country?

There is some serious mass confusion going on or something. I have the idea that the internet has had a negative effect on the mental development of the collective because nowadays you can find all sorts of bullshit with the click of a button.

Or maybe there's just a lot of stupid people.

Always has been a lot of stupid people. Being able to find something to back up anything on the internet has made them feel much smarter though.

Unfortunately, the internet has also made it stupidly easy for stupid people to form organized groups of stupid.

These kind of protests always remind me of that one radio channel from GTA. Where they are trying to interview a protester and get him to say what his protest is about. Always made me laugh, wanna find it...

Those people, 200 years ago, would still be ill-informed sheeple...but they would rely on the word of their preachers, their bosses, and their co-workers re: politics and economics, as opposed to Google, talking heads on TV, and stupid chain e-mails from those aforementioned people.

E: Although it's a lot easier to find huge quantities of stuff posing as "fact" rather than "opinion".  Either way, it's not optimal.  The Catch-22 of letting any form of democracy be "democratic" is that the masses obviously don't always know "what's best"...
