I've got to be careful here, because I know what happened the last time I was pleased the Wallabies were defeated in a World Cup match - New Zealand was defeated in their very next game by France. And guess who NZ is playing next.

Unfortunately I didn't watch much of the game, only the second half of the first half. An all-kicking game though and those are never very exciting. Great result for Ireland though, it's always nice to see the underdog pull through, (unless the ABs are playing.)

The Wallabies though - look, they didn't play their best and they weren't prepared for an Irish side that played with such passion, but it is oh so very foolish to write them off. Ever. I'm probably more nervous of the prospect of NZ playing Oz in the semis than the final, (assuming they both get that far.)

I was very disappointed to hear the Aus Captain call it 'footy'.

Its a good tournament at least.

Everything in Australia is footy though. Union? Footy. League? Footy. Soccer/Football? Footy. Aussie Rules? Footy. Ping Pong? Footy.

Commentators here are over-analysing the Ireland win and what it'll mean for the ABs in terms of preferable or non-preferable quarter/semi opponents. Didn't they learn anything from 2007 when they were knocked out in the quarter finals by France? There is no such thing as a preferable opponent in the knock-out stages of the World Cup.

Australia playing the US of A right now. I'm only semi-keeping tabs as I'm at work but from the look of it the Irish seem to have really knocked the wind out of the Wallabies and they've had a pretty poor start. Imagine if the US actually won.

Edit: Hmm, two Australian tries in about ten minutes, guess not.

Edit: Seems to have woken up the Americans, they've been attacking well and Australia has been forced to defend. Try to America in the 22nd minute.

Edit: Okay Australia just took two easy tries. They haven't been consistent but when they've hit they've hit hard.

Edit: Half Time, 22 - 5 to Australia. Australia is playing pretty poorly and it's a shame that the US team isn't experienced enough to take advantage of that. Kurtley Beale has also been forced to leave the field. Injury woes? That'd suck for Oz as Beale is a slippery little bastard.

Edit: Australia's try scoring has been good but their kicking has been awful, so far I think only two have gone over.

Edit: 41 - 5 and Barnes actually converts a try.

Edit: Final score 67 - 5 to Australia. The scoreline doesn't really reflect that Australia didn't really play all that well. Not their best anyway and their kicking game was awful. Eleven tries, about four of them converted. Faingaa got knocked the fuck out in the final minutes too, holy crap.

Looking forward to tomorrow's big game. New Zealand versus France. Taking into acount that this is

- Richie McCaw's 100th match as an All Black,
- The first World Cup match NZ and France have had since Cardiff in 2007 where France caused a huge upset and knocked out New Zealand unprecedentedly early,

expect to see something pretty cool. The French always love taking down the ABs and they have a record that paints them as the ABs #1 nemesis in World Cup rugby, they always rise to the occasion. They'll want to keep that tradition strong and in the typical French fashion thay always love raining on someone's parade. The All Blacks on the other hand want to keep their status as tournament favourites alive, they'll also want to mark Sir Richie's 100th test cap in spectacular fashion but most of all... revenge! Revenge! REVENGE!!

If it involves 300lb people it can't really be called a sport.

At least they gave it a try though.

All Blacks did the Kapa o Pango haka, (the "violent" one,) this should be meeeean.

Edit: Half Time. 19 - 3 to New Zealand. Good first half of Rugby, always nice to see a game where the teams are more evenly matched. France hit hard at the start but couldn't capitalise. New Zealand on the other hand scored with considerably less opportunity and defensively have been brilliant. A French player did a bit of a Hollywood at the end of the half to milk a penalty but I can't say they didn't deserve the points. Important thing to remember now: France will come out for the second half on fire. 16 points is by no means a winning margin, particularly when it comes to the French and their uncanny ability to cause upsets.

Edit: Full time, 37 - 17 to New Zealand! Great game of rugby, had it all, even a Dan Carter Drop Goal. Impressive intercept from the French for their first try and then their second try... well it was a bit controvertial and I think the referee's hands were kind of tied when he decided to award it. All Blacks showed some real class, they have a couple of really good duos out there. Nonu and Smith have been good together for some time but I was impressed to see the sort of thing Carter and Williams were pulling out. A couple of missed opportunities but it looks good for the road ahead.

Richie McCaw's 100th test match in black too with a presentation and speech from Jock Hobbs who unfortuantely is not looking too well at the moment. A nice touch, and against the old World Cup rivals Les Bleus too.

Edit: Oh, *ahem* REVENGE!!!

Yeah, I don't think that sort of thing would have worked had it been the knockout stages or had the score been closer. I think the refereeing was really quite good overall though. The call on that try he hesitated on and I think he made an appropriate call given the circumstances. The All Blacks were well in control, comfortably ahead and there wasn't much time left in the game. The French deserved a try anyway, they played well and put on some good pressure. To be honest though I don't think they would have beaten the All Blacks' defense otherwise.

Of course I'd be singing a different tune had the French made an incredible comback and won by less than seven points.

@ Dilbert: There are two that the All Blacks perform. Ka Mate, (the traditional one,) and Kapa o Pango, (the one with the throat-cutting motion.) They generally save Kapa o Pango for matches that have a certain significance.

There are heaps of hakas though. My school had its own school haka.

Canda vs. Japan a 23 - 23 draw. Don't see that often in rugby.

Edit: Just looked it up. The last time Canada and Japan played each other, which was at the 2007 World Cup, they also drew, this time 12 - 12.

Any English fans got any comment about the not-so-blatant cheating in the game against Romania, using a non-official ball for Wilkinson's kicks because he doesn't like the official one? While I'm not suggesting that there should be any major penalties here I do say this is shocking in light of Samoa being fined $10,000 for one of their players using a non-official mouth guard and smiling. $10,000 for a minnow team which can barely afford to be at the World Cup while England, the most highly-paid team at the competition, gets off with a slap on the wrist.

A NZ TV show paid the fine for the Samoan team which is nice but still, the IRB has not proven itself a very good governing body with this incident.

Samoa are playing South Africa at the moment and giving it their all. Pretty good for a so-called minnow to hold the current world champions to 13 - 5 with about 15 minutes to go.

Edit: Final score 13 - 5. Find it kind of off that there was a Welsh referee presiding given that Wales are in the same pool and the effect a Samoan win would have had on the Dragons.

The refereeing has been a bit strange at this world cup, different interpretations of offside, having an English ref (wayne cunt barnes) ref a wales match etc

Is Canada still in it? I know we don't have a chance of winning, but all the talk around here is about starting to build a name for ourselves internationally now so that we increase our chance for the next World Cup.

Canada is playing the All Blacks tomorrow. It's their last game of the pool stage and even if they win with a bonus point they can't get through to the quarter finals.

Canada could be good but they're kind of like the US in that they simply don't get enough experience at international level. Also judging by the draw against Japan fatigue is setting in. The ABs could very well crush them but on the other hand it'll be a chance for Canada to show what they're capable of.
