Wright wasn't a turnoff because he wasn't running...
Wright wasn't a turnoff for Obama, that is. At least not a significant one. Wright's name was attached to Obama, and the GOP certainly tried to use the Pastor against him. Obama spent 20 years listening to his preaching and described him as his own spiritual adviser. Were you in a coma in 2008?
As I said earlier in the thread, name something religiously motivated that Obama has done which you disagree with as it is bad for America.

I can bet you all money that it is nothing in comparison to what the GOP front runners would be willing to do. Save for perhaps"call me crazy" Huntman.

So yeah, thanks for nothin' Bammers (and Congress).

I wish high schools in the U.S. went into the history of other countries/continents more. I would love to teach European history on a high school level but every opening for teaching history here is for American history. We only touch upon the part of European history which is relevant to America. It's really lame. If you want to spend any time dealing with European history in a class room you have to go for a PHD. Gahh I'm so tired of American history.

I took AP European History in high school myself. Maybe you just went to a shitty school.

The deification of the founding fathers drives me nuts. Kmar and me spoke a little about that in EE chat a few days ago. The founding fathers have nothing on some of the big names of European history anyway. None of them can compare against Caesar, Napoleon, Charles V, Fredrick the Great etc.

Sure they can, it's contextual. They each did something amazing in their own time that was relevant to their own nation. Same goes for our founders. Is it a bit overboard? Yeah, but someone like Thomas Jefferson or Ben Franklin are worth celebrating. They were creatures of the enlightenment no less than Frederick the Great or Napoleon.

We had a pissing match about who went to a better high school a little while ago. I won and rather not have to do it again. A little less condensation would be nice, thanks.

I'm talking about depth by the way. AP European history barely scratches the surface of Euro history and doesn't make up for the 12 years of American history.

We don't live in Europe so it's irrelevant. Want to learn Euro history? Read a book. I recommend Jonathan Sumption's three volume history of the Hundred Years War.

I often see quotes from the FF's in support of one thing or another as if it lends credence to an argument, the sad truth of the matter is that the FF's often contradicted themselves, or expressed different opinions in personal letters to friends. (You can hardly blame them having a changing opinion over the years). But you can almost get an argument on both sides of the fence from the same FF so I don't understand why you still see the quotes thrown around so often.

True, but European history is still about as relevant as Asian or African or the history of Oceania to us as a nation. i.e. it's elective worthy, not focus worthy.

I seem to remember just as much "world history" as US or State history when I was in school..."world" being mostly European, with a little Asian thrown in for good measure.

learned a fair amount in high school. First year was basically Western European history, second year was a semester of middle eastern and a semester of African, junior year was US history and senior year was a bunch of different electives... I did one semester of military history.

e: can't say I remember most of what I was taught though except US history

As I said earlier in this thread, religious affiliation was not important enough to significantly sway voters. We're talking about what we knew before he was president, clearly. It's the idea of what having a religious affiliation that is out there that is important with regards to electability. What he has or has not done since winning the Presidency is completely irrelevant to the point. You're seemingly defending Obama and Wright just for the sake of doing so.

Be willing to do? You sound like the omg Obama is a Muslim people now.

Obsessing about the minutae of the founding fathers is somewhat irrelevant too.
