Has anyone on here ever been part of a military Honor Guard? I've been sent an invite to do the training this coming up week and for sure I'm going to do it. I know some of you on here are vets and a I was just wondering.

For those of you who don't know what Honor Guard is....

Does this count?

If so, I've been in an Honor Guard. Loved it. Learned plenty and had a lot of fun.

You stand around in dress uniform and follow orders. Hopefully your dress uniform is better than the butt-ugly olive-coloured NZ Army one.

Really, it's a piece of piss. Stand around, do a bit of drill, coffee and biscuits afterwards, possibly boozing it up later. At least in my experience.

I know what it is and what it requires, I was just looking for personal experiences, tips, etc.

Yes, I had to do a few funeral details. Not fun.

Well my personal experience was that I stood around in the ugly NZ dress uniform and followed orders, did a bit of drill and there was coffee and biscuits afterwards. Then I went boozing.

My tip would be to not drink a bottle of water beforehand.

I've done honour guards before. But I'm part of the drum corps so it's different for me.

No tips really. The Sergeant (or whatever rank the guard leader is) should prepare you well enough, most relish in getting to boss us officers/future officers around.

take a piss/shit beforehand, but make sure your mouth isn't uber-dry either

you don't want to be thirsty during a long ceremony

Closest I've been is flag duty in AFJROTC.

If you end up doing the gun salutes, I hope your unit is better than some the ramshackle ones I've heard at funerals.

Po-pop. Poppity pop.
