I'm not debating this because I'm going to my new house soon and I won't have internet. What I will say is all the hypotheticals regarding getting a shotgun out of a locked safe and then loading it are all moot. When applying for a firearms license "self defence" isn't a valid reason, hunting and target shooting are. If I had a license trying to get my shotgun out of a safe and load it would be stupid, because if the burglar doesn't find you trying to load it and gets scared and leaves/tries to stop you by force you're going to shoot him and end up with a lengthy court battle. Like this guy:

Although that's a tad different because he shot someone in the back as he was leaving, either way I wouldn't risk the legal implications.

My stance on firearms in this country is this. Most people, regardless of nationality, are fucking stupid. The current system works for us because it's been this way for many years, and there are less guns in circulation than the US. If I lived in America, I'd probably have a few guns too because of the amount in circulation (and because shooting is fun). However I don't live in America, and despite me wanting a firearm I'd rather give it a miss if it means the vast majority of idiots don't get to have one.

Where did I say I would try and hit someone without knowing whether they were armed or not? I've got eyes you know, and lights in my house. I can size up the person during the 'fuck off' phase. Most burglars will run, regardless of whether they have a knife or not, especially when faced with three people, two of them (me and my brother) who are over six foot and wielding lumps of very hard wood that have considerbly more range than a knife. Would I needlessly throw myself into a fight? No. But I would fight them if I have to. You don't need a gun to fight someone successfully.

Probably try and sneak out quietly and call the police. Unless it looks like I could beat him in a fight it's not worth risking my life by trying to go all Crouching Tiger on some thug. Now, if I had a gun, I'd confront him while aiming the gun at him and then call the police, telling him that if he moves an inch I'll make a rorschach test on the wall with his head.

so honestly, which scenario would you prefer? the one where the criminal is in control, or the one where you are? Basically, that is all this is about.

Where I'm in control. If the scenario is that I walk in to my house and see the burglar, then in the current state I reside in I'd probably have to let him ransack the place because in Maryland it is nearly impossible to have a concealed carry permit, so it's not like I'd be walking in to my house armed. If I slept with a gun near my bed and heard somebody break in, then I'd certainly grab my firearm and confront the crook.

Living in a good neighborhood doesn't hurt though.

Trust me there are a LOT of things I wish I could change about this state :facepalm: at least a short drive over the Potomac puts you in Virginia which has much better gun laws. You can even open carry if you choose to be so bold, although there have been incidents of law-abiding citizens being harassed because some yuppie freaked out when a dude with a gun holstered to his hip walked into Starbucks.

I stated what I would do. I stated that I would first throw something (as a means of distracting and throwing them off balance), and then hit them with something (could that be the bat? or something similar? who the fuck cares? its a heavy dull object.) The scanerio remains the same whether I have my brother with me or not. Perhaps you'd like some character background next time when I have to introduce all the players in the scene for you?

The chances of this happening at all? Small. I live in a good neighbourhood and I have an alarm system. Your average criminal is just a frightened individual, and will bolt at the first sign that someone is coming to get them. It doesn't matter if they smash a window or get in quietly, the alarm will go off, and if they don't scarper quick then they will have three people on their asses.

again, didn't say anything about actually shooting. It is about gaining control of the situation, and nothing you have mentioned accomplishes that decisively.  Hence you have no real means of self defense.  You are gunna yell at him and throw a something at him...PPAAALEASE.
