sponsorship is a big thing nowadays as the game has grown massively in the last 5 years. Every cunt is sponsored now, I know the main ones (phil ivey, negraenu, harrington etc) but i dont think i know any of the pros sponsored by pokerstars now. factor in official winnings and private games and it is probably above 10gurdeep wrote:

sponsorships don't pay very much. full tilt got shut down, so all of those guys aren't sponsored anymore. most of the team pokerstars players just get little bonuses for playing a certain amount on their site. phil ivey's expectation from playing tournaments only would probably be around 7 figures if he played every single live tournament with at least a $5k buyin, but he doesn't do that. the only people whose expectation can be that high are the high stakes cash game players like durrrr, isildur1, omgclayaiken, and other sickos like them.
that's not to say that there aren't several people who make 7 figures by playing tournaments. a lot of the tournaments pay more than $1m for 1st, but the people who win them can't expect to do so every time they play. traveling and other expenses build up, not to mention that you lose $10k every time you bust one of the bigger tourneys before the money. a good mtt player's expected roi in your average wsop/wpt field is probably around 100%. so with a buyin of $10k, their ev is to only cash for $20k
all of that is before taxes too...

plus variance is tournament poker is pretty fucking high. in theory, the best player in the world could go forever without winning a tournament. that's why online poker is so much better than live. 3 hrs playing online is equal to like 3 days of playing live
