Zero threat. Wouldn't be surprised if we ended up doing joint exercises with them once it goes operational.

With the way things are going, pretty likely.
Only economic imperialism, as opposed to any type of old school colonialism. They have all the resources they need. What's the benefit of Chinese imperialism?

China is investing heavily into Angola right now. they are even building a rail line from the west to east coast of Africa.

just for a steady supply of iron ore.

They're investing heavily into just about all of sub-Saharan Africa, often on the heels of Western interests that have given up.

Very likely I think. China is becoming more and more dominant and is showing that to its direct neighbours through excersises at sea, or say, intimidation of Taiwan. China still thinks that Taiwan = China.
China doesn't need an Aircraft carrier to invade Taiwan, they're close enough anyway. Carriers are usually for overseas force projection. If they park it next to Taiwan and invade that's the first thing Taiwan would hit anyway.

Besides that carrier is tiny compared to the nimitz afaik.

Business interests, mostly. Infrastructure, from what I've read.

Kissinger's On China is a pretty readable book.
Quite. For all the economic aid they get the SE Asian countries are no great fans of China in general.

Sovereignty is a pretty big deal there, which is why the US doesn't really have much influence in the region. China attempting to become regionally hegemonic would not go over well at all, and would likely invite multilateral cooperation amongst those other nations that does not currently exist today (due to the historic focus on sovereignty), and may very well initiate an increase in the US's influence in the region as a counter to China, along with India and possibly Russia.

China knows this and doesn't want that, so they will play nice.

They would.

And when has that ever stopped them in the past? Sure, they might be subtle about it, but the other countries are fearful for a reason.

Just got done reading some articles that showed the people in the region are more concerned about Japan altering its military posture than China's growth. Fool me once, you know...

Historically China never really expanded beyond its borders (Mongolian Yuan Dynasty don't count, they're not Chinese lel). China always focused a lot more on commerce.

You never know. If we don't, one carrier might slip through the net of nuclear sub launches and attack one of its own buildings in Seattle.

As long as they don't clean off all the rust, and thereby sink the damn thing.

Important to note that, like most things Soviet, that carrier is probably held together by rust.  Structural Rust, an essential building component of all things Soviet.  And concrete - big blocks of concrete.  And poorly shielded nuclear reactors.  And Vodka.
