Thankfully that was pretty much forgotten in the 90s, companies want people to do jobs of work and most film school and social science graduates are keeping McDonalds lively, not the office.

David Brents just aren't in high demand, thankfully.
pretty much my facetious point... though saying that most of these token ftse 100 companies do want "well rounded" candidates, which means they will often take on a shocking amount of future-david-brent material in clueless 'business studies' grads from the million+ universities (aka the ex-polytechnics on the south coast that require like 3 C's at a-level to get into and normally entail 3 years of rigorous alcopop drinking and traffic cone stealing).

There is a lot of social interaction between me, client, and management. If I lacked social skills I would be chained to a drafting desk for the rest of my life. That's where those socially awkward kids end up, locked in the back room with their talents exploited for modest pay.

the point was that their course seems to consist of nothing but this... i worked my ass off for 3 years, too (extra hard in fact because i trainwrecked the second year and had to make up a marks defecit over an extremely demanding choice of modules, but i digress...) it was an ancillary point saying that sometimes these 'social bright sparks' do get given spurious roles in good organizations. but i largely agree with you. im just confused as to what you're getting at with the qualification that white engineering grads are more social than indian/chinees engineering grads. surely if they're more hard working and have a stronger ethic, they're going to get the job whether or not you can discuss recent affairs and the latest films.

john you missed the part where i said "outside of the science/maths professions". im talking about ordinary graduate employment - the sort of jobs 75% of graduates go for, having earned a degree in a subject they were interested in merely as a stepping stone or a prerequisite for a 'higher level' of employment, employment that is typically and largely unrelated to their choice of major (case in point: your girlfriend, no?) as i said if you intend to carry on in the profession you were basically educated for, your social skills are irrelevant. i don't care how well you can interface with clients and management-- that's what you've been inducted to do for 3/4 years, so rightly you should be pretty comfortable and in your element. the part that confused me is why you'd consider your social skills as an advantage over asian engineering grads when the jobs-in-industry don't give a damn about it, anyway, which is the only graduate marketplace you're going to be competing against them.

yeah and you've been calling me a fat asian kid for a while now sooo what is it. Am i white or asian to you, make up your mind. It's got nothing to do with ethnicity but moreso with culture. You know why a lot of Asian kids aren't that sociable (especially 1st gen, 2nd gen not so much), it's coz their parents shove them in cram schools till 9pm and they sleep at 12 wake up at 6 everyday. I hang out WAY more with Asians than I do with white people here, not that I discriminate but because it just happens that most of the people in my courses are Asian (and people I knew in Taiwan before I got here).

i was talking about the us job market, where an undergraduate degree seems to be par for the course for any job in a semi professional capacity. they don't have public schools there, much less ones that perpetuate them. the only myth i encountered at public school was 'go to oxford and take ppe and remember to stay in contact with your great uncle cyril in the civil service'. we definitely weren't told anything about 'go to a million+ university and get a management degree and you'll do well, my boy'...

you are fat and asian, but here in the context of this discussion "asian students" clearly designates the group (that you [somehow?] distinguish yourself from) that hit the books 12 hours a day and are beat by their parents and considered a shame to the family if they don't become doctors by age 15.

Probably because my dad is white and my mom has a lot of friends who does typical asian shit and their kids are in college now not having a lot of friends. My parents just have more of a westernize approach tbh.

It's really not that hard. And it makes your algebra skills razor sharp. Kill two birds with one stone and all that jazz.
I was taught differentiation in year 9.

Here in New York, they teach Geometry in 9th, Algebra in 10th (or vice versa, I don't remember exactly), Trigonometry in 11th and Pre-Calculus in senior year. The advanced students start with the 10th grade course in 9th and finish up with the equivalent to Calculus I.

Algebra started in like year 4, trig and geometry in year 7 and were built on all the way through high school. Probability and calculus started around year 9.

I don't remember doing algebra in year 4 when I was in Aussie. Trig and Geo in year 7 was probably very elementary introductions (ya'll niggas had to do proofs and shit?). I remember here in NSW extension 2 math is probably Algebra 2 and Extension 4 math is calc afaik.

Just looked it up:

High School Mathematics Tests

9th      Integrated Algebra
10th    Geometry
11th    Algebra2/Trigonometry
12th    Mathematics B

And people wonder why our kids suck at math.

Just to be clear, how old is someone in year 7? Our 9th graders are 14.

9: Geo
10: alg 2
11: pre-calc
12: AP Calc/ AP stats.

dude uni stats here is the same shit i learned in high school lol.

i was only talking about med school applications where it is essential that you can be sociable or you'd be a god awful doctor.

i would assume in a field like engineering it would be somewhat similar though.  it would probably depend on the employer whether or not they'd go for a grad with or without social skills, but definitely the upper level employees and management couldnt be robots.  and the "robot" description can apply to whites, asians, middle easterns, indians... everyone.  of course there are highly sociable asians and the like, but not all that many (from somebody who has been in both engineering and physics in school)

I guess its coz I lived in a Taiwan and lots of kids had fake passports or mommy just had a baby in America and loads grew up in Taiwan (fuck azn math). I failed Geo in grade 9 coz my teacher was a psycho bitch that gave all the girls A's (who played volleyball) and boys Cs mostly. Did it again and ended up with an A- with a different teacher (bitch got fired lol). got a shit teacher who doesnt know how to teach at alg 2 so only skimmed by with a D and I skipped right to stats (didnt do precalc) and got B's lol.
