Is this something that actually concerns you or someone you know?

I own a retail store and the type of store that it is people have an assumption that I carry nothing but " Made in the USA ". But its far from that. Probably 60% of everything in the store is made out of country. Occasionally I hear complains but when reality is laid out, ( the customer can purchase the " Made in China " and pay a cheaper price vs the " Made in the USA " expensive price and that's if some manufacture in the US is still open ) they usually mumble under their breath and proceed to buy the " Made in China " item.

For me, I go for the better price point that benefits me the most ............ also the quality for the most part is exactly the same between the two

I'll pay for the quality, durable item regardless of the country of origin. Who wants to have to buy the same thing six times? That said, I do get a residual pride thing when I do buy stuff made in the USA but I think it's just leftover marketing from the Buy USA ad campaigns that used to run 24/7 when I was a kid.

Well tbh, I'd be surprised if I was looking to buy some coyboy attire and it wasn't made in the USA. It's something that is expected.

It's not www.JacksonsEasternStore.com, now is it?

a good example that happen to-day was a customer had a $12 belt in her hand and she was complaining that this belt is some shitty chinese belt that will fall apart in a week

she was given the option to step in our leather shop for a american made belt ........... 10 mins later she came back and purchased the china one

and that's what I have to hear but when most manufacture companies have shut down and the ones that are still making items of the same type that china makes but at twice as much .... you've got to ask yourself in this day and age, do you want to pay double for something that was made in this country

Well you have to make that same choice don't you, when you're choosing what to stock your shelves with?

It's easier for you to sell an import and charge a large markup than it is to sell a local product that is already expensive and a large markup on top of that would never sell.

yeah, it's a vicious cycle.

I looked into buying bags that were local(at least in the US) and/or organic.  It might be worth it if I thought people would pay the extra that I would have to charge, but they won't/can't.

for the price point items ( mostly items under $150 MSRP ) they come out of china but get to the more expensive items and I can dig around and find some american made

some items are even made in-house which keeps some cost for the customer down

Somewhat, yes. Recently I was shopping for shoes and it boiled down to these two New Balances. One pair was made in the USA and the other was made in China. I liked them both quite a lot and ultimately went for the US one.

My mom also had to buy a blender recently and she chose to get a Kitchenaid since it was made in the US. Of course, with both of these examples, the American-made product is also very high quality. If it was inferior to the Chinese one we'd probably get that instead. Sadly some things like computers and TVs are impossible to buy American for.

What annoys me is when people associate the Big Three automakers as American and anything else as un-American when that's not true at all. Several foreign automakers manufacture in the US and source parts from the US as well.

Also during purchasing I have to look at which company ( american or china ) keeps that particular item in-stock and how quick they re-stock the inventory

I've dealt with american companies that couldn't keep up with demand and the company is waiting for part out of brazil but while the china counterpart has all the companies in 1 country

Don't even notice where my products come from, might be North [best] Korea for all I care. SERE's case seems more unique since China + Western doesn't compute for most people (it's the Far East FFS). It's not like I trust American quality to be any better than Chinese-made goods either.

"Made in USA" doesn't have the same sort of "quality guarantee" that it used to.
