I've read on the defencejobs website that SSO doesnt require prior flying experience, but it does help to have a CPL only to waiver some other requirement.
Yeah I've heard that about going GSO, but I've also heard that they'll sometimes offer an aviation cadetship to army candidates prior to entering RMC which does confirm them a spot on pilots course. Not sure what the requirements are for that but it does seem like another way to get in.
I have considered RAAF and the RAN, but have had a special interest for army helicopters. However if what you say is correct in that the job offer is there after training then I would consider it... might have to bring it up at the YOU session.
The whole ADFA thing does seem like a way to settle into military life, but I think the thing was (as an army pilot) was that there was only one degree available to study, and I am not exactly sure of the relevance and use of a B.Tech (aviation) is (apart from a greater allowance, or so I've read).
Might call up tomorrow and book it in. I've also downloaded a few of those aptitude testing booklet things just to get a bit of familiarity to it all. Would you recommend anything else that would help in the process?
I (temporarily) worked with someone who knew someone who was an ARA pilot, but I think contacting him might be a bit difficult as he was made out to be pretty busy... I heard he started his own business, and was also employed in the ARA at the same time, which I guess would make him a bit difficult to speak to, let alone the networking link is relatively weak.
From what I've heard from talking to recruiters/ friends of brother in army, the SSO entry would be limited to like 10 guys, who all have like 2k hours flying experience. And basically, if you have that much flying experience, you wouldn't be joining the army because, the life sucks, unless you're into spending your wk/ends in the bush cold. The pay isn't that great compared to airlines/other aviation jobs, and the amount of flying time you'd actually do, which wouldn't be that much anyway.
Plus i'm biased because I wouldn't want to spend 10+ years in the army, officer or not.

Yeah it was a'ight.
My state was founded by Batman. Your opinion is invalid.
If I already had flight time I too wouldnt look into the army that much compared to civil for the reasons you said. But since the method that I'm going into aviation now is pretty... well it isnt too great, and the carbon tax would increase AVGAS costs. With the way that I'm pursuing the CPL in the future, I dont think I could cover the cost of it. Its just that the military seems like a good way to get into aviation.bakinacake wrote:
