Once both people reach a certain age, maybe 22ish, it really doesn't matter anymore.
The way I see it, there are age clusters when it comes to maturity levels and dating outside of them seems strange.

Not everyone is the same blah blah but in my experience those are the different levels of maturity most people fall into. And if you date below your maturity level or are aroused by something below your maturity level than there's something off about you.
I'm 21 right now, and the thought of dating anyone more than a year younger than me would make me feel like a pedo.
Dating a girl straight out of high school would feel like dating a child. So inexperienced, naive, fresh. Eww. I want something that could keep up with me, not someone to babysit. I'm talking about sex either fyi. And when it does comes to sex: it would still feel icky.
That's just how I feel.
