As long as you do it through the Red Cross or one of those other reputable blood donation organizations instead of a back alley, you've got nothing to worry about. It doesn't hurt you at all, since your body can recover from any form of hemorrhage and replace the cells you lost. The needle is bigger than the ones they use for a lot of innoculations, so that was a rather strange experience the first time for me. However, it's not painful by any means. The worst thing that could happen is like what happened to my friend at her high school when she threw up for some reason. If you're not squeamish about seeing your own blood, go for it.
