Getting a return or not is irrelevant.  In your case, being single, you could claim zero, make some pre-payments, and get a large tax return.  Or claim 2, and get reamed at tax time.

In my case, it's a balancing act between Federal and State taxes.  Managing my AGI with the feds is fairly easy, such that my contributions are such that come tax time, I'm close to zero credit/debit.  Problem is State taxes, which in Cali, not all my fed deductions apply.  At times, I end up paying some Alternative Minimum Tax penalty in addition to writing a large amount to Sacramento.  Reach a certain income threshold, and deductions like child credit get phased out.

As FEOS has stated for those 40% who end up not paying any taxes, make less money, and the government will actually pay you to have more and more kids.  In fact, the more kids you have, the more benefits who qualify for like housing assistance and home repairs.

Not the OP.  Irrelevant on getting a return or not.  It all depends on how much you've been contributing all year.  I get people talking about getting thousands back every year on their return.  About waiting for their tax return to fund some big expenditure.  When in fact, all that huge tax return is giving the Feds/States a zero interest loan on your money.  What you need to do is figure out the proper contributions you need to make year round so that come tax time, tax due is close to zero.

In my case, for State, where I always pay every year, I try to minimize my AMT.  Zero interest loans to the government?  No thanks.

Like I said, I'm close to zero for the Feds.  Then owe thousands on the State, but not so much that I get reamed by AMT.

Back on OT, does working from home at times count as not showing up for work?  Power up the laptop from home, check emails, make breakfast, attend webex/phone meetings, all the while still not changed from last nights clothes.

Well, I can claim hours on weekends and evenings if I need to run processes that can't be run during normal work hours.

If a international phone meeting occurs in the early hours before I normally leave for work, I can claim those hours as well.  I get ready for work, drop off the kids to school, then stay at the school parking lot in the car, participating in a phone conference.  I get hours for that.

We get screwed for travel though.  Off hours air travel time doesn't count as hours.

I was a student last year, had $3000 in taxable income, and got back $1600. System is broken.

since we're on taxes
The tax man may be on the hunt for the super fan who caught Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit.

Christian Lopez, 23, recovered the prized ball his father fumbled after The Captain hammered it into their section of the stands in the third inning of the Yankees' win over Tampa Bay on Saturday.

The Verizon salesman from Highland Mills, N.Y., gave the ball back to Jeter, whom he called an "icon," and the Yankees lavished a slew of prizes, including luxury box seats for every remaining home game this season and post-season and some signed memorabilia, upon him.

Now the IRS wants a piece. The prizes Lopez received are estimated to be worth more than $32,000 -- and, like game show contestants, Lopez may have to pay taxes on the gifts and prizes because the IRS considers them income.

Some estimate the IRS will put Lopez on the hook for anywhere between $5,000 and $13,000, reports the Daily News.

If it comes down to that, Lopez says he'll pay the tax man because he's not about to relinquish his seats. The young government major says his family and friends will help him out.

The specially marked home run ball Lopez returned to Jeter was estimated to have been worth about $250,000 to $300,000 at auction.

I'm also on Salary.  But we have comp-time.  Work on the weekends, over the days hours, go home after 40 hours.  Or carry the extra hours over for next week.  Overtime is strictly controlled and requires multiple levels of approval, reserved usually for big projects.

Comp time rocks.
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.
