take it out of the enclosure and plug it in with a sata cable to your computer.  that ought to buy you some time (as well as give you faster transfer rates to copy data)

Thanks to that trade agreement thingy, we have the same ruling over here. Most of our providers are "ehh, fuck it", because the copyright trolls also put a legal process (the only process the ISPs have to obey) they never use.

Then again we also have little bitches that cut you off for downloading the latest turd from Michael Bay.

I got this 2tb external drive and it started to make strange sounds.
Its like theres an elf with a typewriter in there, typing real slow and short sentences.
*click click click click slide click click click click slide click click click click slide* and so on and on and on.
So it strated doing that and now it stopped working. Pretty fucked up.
Anyone know what it is?

I would really love to be able to recover the files on there. The drive itself isnt that important, it stil has a 1 year warranty i believe.
clicks of death. this is the platter inside your hard-drive failing. back it up immediately and prepare to say your last goodbyes.

i would say unplug it and save it but i can't even guarantee that would do any benefit. i've unplugged an external when it went into those death-knells before and then it... wouldn't start up again at all. my best advice is to just start backing up all of your stuff any way that you can right now. don't take the hard-drive to a store (removing it and transporting it may just be that little bit too much)... just get a means to copy your data and DO IT. i've had the death clicks loads of times with different hard-drives... sometimes they stumbled on at about 25% performance, super slow, for about 3 months... other times i've had about 2-3 days before it just fails.
Cant acces my files anymore, so thats all gone.
Im just going to go to the store and get a new one. The only files on there were a few movies and i still have the torrents for those so its not a huge loss.

now is a time to try the freezer trick. put it in the freezer (obviously wetproofed, i suggest in a ziplock bag) and freeze it for a while... then plug it back in. you might get another 5 minutes, or even another hour out of it.

So crazy it might just work

Also, what methods have you tried to retrieve the data so far?

Finally got around to setting up all of my stuff for IPv6. It's nice to see how many services do native v6 these days.

A comfortable absence of hypocrisy when I complain about the state of IPv6 support in large vendor infrastructure equipment. There aren't really many practical end-user benefits yet.

Like an ISO?

I'd assume PowerISO would have some sort of functionality like that in it, it has everything else.

Damn, I... had something for this

I have a request.

Some kind of widget or program that can sit on my second monitor and convert times for me - like I want to know when 8:00 am EST 13/7 is and dont want to go into a browser (or work it out in my head using my phone or second clock on the computer).

Googling it just directed me to OSX widgets which are useless to me (I assume..).

edit: to be clear, I am after something that isnt just multiple timezone clocks, I can do that easily but would prefer to be able to just enter the time date like in some of the online ones.

edit edit: Even something that just takes a specific time and converts it to EST would be enough. Basically I am sick of converting AEST to EST for pretty much every time/date given for things.

If you're using Windows 7, just put a bunch of clock widgets on your desktop. I have one for my home back in the US and one for Brisbane where two of my best friends are.

In theory, yes, but the speed difference probably isn't worth the hassle.
